10 Live-Action Films Currently In the Works By Disney
The Disney live-action trend continues to be in full swing going into 2020 with numerous project in the works! From Disney Villains to much-loved Royalty. Here are 10 live-action remakes you’ll definitely want to keep on your radar!
The Little Mermaid
One of the live-action remakes that has definitely gained momentum is The Little Mermaid which is slated to start shooting in the Caribbean in April. As we reported earlier this week, casting is currently underway for the roles of Ariel’s sisters in the film. Rob Marshall has already signed on to direct and Halle Bailey will star in the coveted role of Ariel. Melissa McCarthy has been confirmed in the role of Ursula with Awkwafina to portray Scuttle and Wonder’s Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. Disney also recently confirmed the Jonah Hauer-King will play Ariel’s love interest, Prince Eric. As of going to print, no official details on a release date have been given.
Pinocchio
At the end of January, it was confirmed that Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis has signed on to direct and co-write the live-action adaptation of this Disney classic. Chris Weitz is expected to share in the writing duties with the project slated to start by the end of 2020. No casting details for the production have started as of yet. It’s early days for this live-action remake as of now but keep following with MickeyBlog. We promise to keep you posted.
Lilo & Stitch
Earlier this week, we reported that Disney is currently working on a live-action/CGI hybrid of this much loved 2002 film. The project is expected to go directly to the Disney+ streaming network and will start shooting in Hawaii this Fall. The remake is said to follow the same story as the animated film that followed a young girl’s close encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial.
Peter Pan & Wendy
The live-action Peter Pan film dubbed Peter Pan and Wendy has really gained traction over the last few months. The project is expected to start production earlier this year and Casting Calls have already gone out for young actors from New Zealand to take on the role of Peter Pan. There has also been much speculation around the coveted role of Tinker Bell with apparently both Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie being considered for the roll. A rumor also surfaced last week that Joaquin Phoenix was in the running for Captain Hook! With these exciting prospect we’ll be watching closely. Production is expected to begin as early as April.
As Yet Untilted Princess Film
This project is still in the rumor stage but we thought it worth mentioning! According to recent reports online, Disney is considering making a live-action Disney movie centring around the Princesses. The project will center around all the princess that have appeared in previous or upcoming live adaptations. The 12 Official Disney Princesses are as follows: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana (and maybe Elsa and Anna from Frozen. That would mean that the following actresses/princesses could potentially be involved in the project: Lily James’ Cinderella, Elle Fanning’s Aurora, Emma Watson’s Belle, Naomi Scott’s Jasmine, Crystal Liu’s Mulan and Halle Bailey’s Ariel in a live-action crossover. We’re told that the project is only in the preliminary stages and the studios are exploring the possibility of bringing the royals together.
Cruella
Emma Stone — one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood — is in London filming Disney’s Cruella. This live-action film based on the notorious baddie from 101 Dalmatians is set to be a spinoff with an original storyline in the same vein as Maleficent. The film will take place in the punk rock era of 1970s London. Other cast members include Paul Walter House in the role of Horace and Joel Fry as Jasper. Emma Thompson is also part of the project but as of going to print that role remains undisclosed. Directing the film is Craig Gillespie of I, Tonya and Lars and the Real Girl. It’s expected to be released on May 28, 2021.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Snow White’s Scary Adventure at the Disneyland park isn’t the only Snow White remake in the works. Sources began reporting last year that Disney will give the live-action treatment to the original 1937 film. Though few details have been released we do know that casting has already started with Disney trying to fill the roles of Snow White, Prince, Evil Queen and of course the seven dwarfs. The project is expected to kick off this March in Vancouver, Canada.
Jungle Book 2
Again, this one remains the stuff of rumor but various sources are reported that Jungle Book fans could be getting a sequel to the live-action release. “The idea is to go further through the Kipling but also go into some of the Disney resources from the ’67 film that maybe didn’t get to see the light of day in the first film,” screenwriter Justin Marks told /Film. This is another project we’ll be following closely and will keep you posted!
Sword In the Stone
The status of this remake seems to be a bit on-again, off-again But last year, the Hollywood Reporter claimed that Bryan Cogman, writer/producer for Game of Thrones wrote the script for the live-action Sword in the Stone which will reportedly be directed by 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. No word yet on casting or whether the film is heading to the theaters or Disney+.
Prince Charming
Based on the success of Maleficent Disney is also apparently working on a live-action film centring around Prince Charming. According to insiders, the film will retell the Cinderella story from the perspective of his brother who never really lived up to the family name. We’re quite excited about this project especially because it was created by Stephen Chbosky who write and directed The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Over the past few months, there’s also been murmurings of several additional live-action projects from Hercules, Tarzan, Aladdin 2, Brother Bear, Herbie the Lovebug and more! However the 10 above seem to be the most credible.
