Four Franchises That Are Getting A New Life With the Launch of Disney Plus
Tomorrow markets the anticipated launch of the Disney’s new streaming services Disney Plus! We’ve spent a lot of time over the last few months talking about how franchises like Star Wars and Marvel are set to soar on Disney+ with new series, as well as back catalogues, being readily available for both. However, as a recent piece on CNBC highlights, new blockbusters aren’t the only Disney franchises getting new content on Disney+. Several older films and shows will also be getting a new life.
Let’s check out four of our favorites:
Monsters, Inc.
There were two feature-length films in this beloved Pixar franchise – “Monsters Inc.” and “Monsters University.” But Disney Plus has a new series in the mix “Monsters at Work.” This series will look at events taking place after the original film and features the original voice cast. It will delve a little deeper into the transition Monsters Inc faces as it transitions from scare power to laugh power.
At the center of the new series is Ben Feldman who voices the lead character Tyler Tuskman a scarer who arrives for his first day of work only do discover that the company has switched to a new power source.
This series is slated to premiere in 2020.
Toy Story
With ‘Toy Story 4’ bringing in a might $1.07 billion at the global box office its not surprising that Disney is looking for ways to continue this success on Disney plus! As we’ve mentioned before here on MickeyBlog the beloved ‘Toy Story 4’ character Forky will be getting his own series of shorts “Forky Asks a Question.” During these episodes, the googly-eyed plastic spork will answer questions about the world around him.
But that’s not all! Coming to Disney+ is also a series called “Lamp Life” that explores where Bo Peep was during “Toy Story 3″ and how she arrived at the antique shop in ‘Toy Story 4.”
Both “Forky Asks a Question” and “Lamp Life” will be available when Disney Plus launches tomorrow.
Lizzie McGuire
It’s been nearly two decades since “Lizzie McGuire” wone over audiences (having aired between 2001 – 2004.) The series followed the title character as she navigated middle school and even resulted in a feature-length film. Though no release date has been announced yet, Disney has announced that Hillary Duff will be back in the title role. The plot will center around Lizzie reaching her 30s, working in Manhattan and still dealing with the animated version of herself! Many of the original cast members will be back to reprise their roles including Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine and Jake Thomas as Lizzie’s mother, father and little brother.
High School Musical
Another massive hit for Disney Channel was the “High School Musical” films. The first two films appeared on Disney Channel with the third also released for a select run in theaters. The films followed high school students Troy and Gabriella who get roles in the school’s musical and the friendships, romance and conflicts that happen as they prepare for opening night. Instead of creating a sequel or prequel to the High School Musical trilogy, Disney has taken a slightly different approach.
“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” revolves around the students attending the high school in which “High School Musical” was filmed putting on a production of “High School Musical.” The show will be available starting tomorrow.
“Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Lizzie McGuire” and “High School Musical” all getting the reboot mean that in addition to Star Wars and Marvel fans, Disney is also trying to attract nostalgic Disney Channel fans who can now re-discover these awesome programs with their families!
