Thunderbolts Cast Announced!
The cast of Marvel’s Thunderbolts has been revealed at the D23 Expo! It has been a tradition of Marvel Studios to end panels at headlining events – such as D23 – with major cast reveals, including The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Eternals. Today was no exception and we now know who will star in the upcoming film.
A New Superhero Squad?
Disney/Marvel fans may be surprised to learn the Thunderbolts is not just a team of heroes. It also includes some who walk a fine line between villain and do-gooder.
The photo above revealed the cast which includes: Wyatt Russell (John Walker/US Agent), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava/Ghost), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier). Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine), will head up the team.
Thunderbolts will be directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns). Eric Pearson, who wrote Black Widow, will write the film.
Who are the Thunderbolts?
Thunderbolts first made their debut in Incredible Hulk #449, published in January 1997. In the comic, they aide Hulk in a fight. Soon after, Thunderbolts got their own comic book series, which debuted in April 1997.
The twist behind the Thunderbolts series was that they weren’t heroes at all! They were supervillains in disguise working together to conquer Earth.
A New Story Line?
As years have passed, the Thunderbolts have become a part of many different Marvel Comics storylines. In the original Thunderbolts series, Baron Zemo – who you may recall from some earlier MCU projects – was the leader. Below is the big reveal page from the very first issue of Thunderbolts.
Daniel Bruhl – who appears Baron Zemo across the MCU, specifically in Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – has not been mentioned as being part of the film. Does this mean that he will be fully replaced by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine as the new leader of these Masters of Evil?
It is worth noting that Thunderbolts will mark the end of the MCU Phase 5. Therefore, it could be assumed that Phase 5 may end with villains leading a new world order. If that is the case, this film could be a very interesting blend of film and comic storylines.
Only time will tell, but we are very excited to have learned about the cast of this intriguing film, scheduled to debut in theaters on July 26, 2024.
