Encanto: Is A Sequel on the Way?
Fans of the hit film Encanto may soon have something more to sing about!
A Surprise Hit!
Film industry executives never quite know if a movie is going to be successful. This is very true when it comes to Disney films. Success is never a guarantee, nor is it prescribed by market research.
Encanto was projected to make just $35 to $40 million during it’s opening weekend. However, the movie made more than $250 million in box office sales around the world.
Not only did the movie have a wildly successful box office run, but it still lands in the top ten of Nielsen’s weekly streaming ratings (as of June).
Encanto Fever
As Encanto began to sweep the nation in popularity, it also began earning significant accolades.
It’s soundtrack has dominated pop culture for months. In fact, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is the very first Disney song to achieve #1 on the Billboard charts since 1993. That year, “A Whole New World,” the theme song of Aladdin, earned top status.
In addition, Encanto won the Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award – all for Best Animated Feature Film.
Recently, Mirabel was added to the Festival of Fantasy parade at Magic Kingdom. An Encanto float was added to Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade. Encanto merchandise has been popping up throughout the parks. Lin Manuel Miranda has even said that he’s “eager” about the possibility of a theme park attraction at a Disney park.

One thing is certain: the popularity of Encanto continues to grow!
Will There Be a Sequel?
It’s no secret that Disney is planning to do more with Encanto. In fact, at the Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to the film as “Disney’s newest franchise.” Disney fans know that one film does not make a franchise, so there is already strong evidence for a sequel.
As fans scramble to determine when that may happen, more clues are popping up!
This week, Adassa, the actress who voiced Dolores in the wildly popular film, created quite a stir on social media. She says Encanto is “preparing for its next amazing phase.”
