‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Star Calls Filming “Absolutely Chaotic”
After a tumultuous 2023, Marvel Studios is slowing down and taking stock of how it makes movies and television.
Last year, Marvel struggled at the box office for the first time in its history, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania under-delivering and The Marvels absolutely bombing.
Over on streaming, season 2 of Loki proved that Marvel had not completely lost its magic touch after Secret Invasion was ravaged by critics and fans alike.
Following the failure of Secret Invasion, Marvel announced that it was overhauling how it made television. Additionally, the studio, along with Disney CEO Bob Iger, publicly stated that the studio’s breakneck release schedule would slow to give Marvel more time to fully develop projects.
One Marvel Star Recalls “Chaotic” Production
Marvel Studios has long been known for its extensive reshooting, last-minute changes, and even the writing of scripts after filming had begun.
While Black Widow has long been pointed out as the film where Marvel’s freewheeling ways finally caught up with it, according to Quantumania star Kathy O’Brian, who played Jentorra in the film, the Ant-Man film was also plagued by chaos on set.
“Yeah, that was absolutely chaotic,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I think we were getting new pages until the last day. And I think I was getting new fights the last day. I just show up, and they’re like, here’s a new fight.”
An Enjoyable Experience Nonetheless
Despite the rushed nature of the project, O’Brien said she had a “lovely” time working on the project.
“I thought me being this kind of like newbie, they might, I don’t know, either ignore me or I would just feel out of place, but they just always made it as welcoming as possible. I was surprised by that environment,” she recalled.
After last year’s struggles, Marvel is slowing down its pace. This year, the only Marvel Studios film to hit theaters will be Deadpool & Wolverine. Hopefully, this extra time will help solve some of the studio’s recent problems.
