Disney Waves the White Flag — Will Stop Reporting ‘The Marvels’ Box Office Numbers
Just four weeks after the film was released, Disney is officially waving the white flag on The Marvels.
The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) team up with Kamala Khan (Iman Velleni) and Monica Rambeou (Teyorrah Paris) after their powers become intertwined.
The film arrived in theaters with high expectations after Captain Marvel managed to gross over $1 billion at the box office in 2019. Adding the popular Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel,= and Monica Rambeau who was introduced as an adult in the hit series WandaVision should have made The Marvels a sure-fire success.
A True Box Office Bomb
Instead of righting the Marvel Studios ship, The Marvels bombed at the box office, opening to a paltry $47 million. Any hopes that the film would find its audience and show legs at the box office were dashed when the film saw an 80% drop off in its second weekend.
Now, The Walt Disney Company has announced that it will no longer be reporting some of The Marvels‘ box office totals.
“With The Marvels box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title,” the company wrote.
The Lowest Grossing Film in MCU History
Now that the dust has settled, we can look at The Marvels in relation to its MCU peers.
The film will finish with a domestic total of less than $100 million dollars, the first MCU film to fail to reach that mark. The previous low domestic haul for a Marvel Studios film was The Incredible Hulk, which managed to bring in $134.8 million domestically.
In total, The Marvels has grossed $197 million globally. That number is 70 million less than The Incredible Hulk, which once again had the previous low mark.
While films with November release dates usually benefit from extended interest through December and the holiday season, that will not be the case with The Marvels.
Now, it is back to the drawing board for Marvel, who will look to rebound with next year’s Deadpool 3.
