‘Black Widow’ Star Slams Marvel For Excessive Reshoots
While, by and large, the actors and actresses who make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have nothing but positive things to say about their time working with Marvel Studios, the way that Marvel does business has rubbed some the wrong way.
Perhaps no film has recieved more criticism from its cast than that of Black Widow.
Marvel Studios has long been known for writing and re-writing scripts even after shooting is underway on projects. For Black Widow, the film’s entire third act was being reworked as filming was underway. While this has caused headaches for some projects, it has given others a sense of creative freedom.
Ray Winstone Calls Marvel “Soul-Destroying”
In a recent interview with Radio Times, Ray Winstone, who portrayed Dreykov in Black Widow, was openly critical of Marvel’s reshoot policy. Reflecting back on his time in the MCU, he said:
“It was fine until you have to do the reshoots. Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it’s too strong…that’s the way Marvel works.”
According to Winestone, if he had gotten his way, his role would have been recast.
“It can be soul-destroying because you feel like you’re doing great work. I actually said, ‘You ought to recast it because that was it for me,’ And you end up doing it again because you’re contracted to do it. Otherwise you end up in court. It’s like being kicked in the balls .”
A Change is on the Horizon
The unfinished nature of Marvel scripts and the subsequent need for reshoots is reportedly one of the things that the studio is rectifying going forward as it overhauls how it makes television series.
With the studio in a period of soul-searching, it sounds like the haphazard, free-wheeling days of making Marvel projects are coming to an end.
