‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Will Directly Connect to the Original ‘Daredevil’
At the conclusion of the Marvel Studio series Echo, New York mobster Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk is transported back to his childhood by Maya Lopez as she attempts to heal his childhood trauma.
Fisk comes away from the scene desperate and shaken, but whether or not the crime lord has reformed is unclear.
With both Fisk and his arch-nemesis Daredevil (Charlie Cox) set to return for Daredevil: Born Again, actor Vincent D’Onofrio will get a chance to explore a new facet of Fisk’s character. As to whether or not Kingpin is changed, however, D’Onofrio is staying silent.
“That’s a good question, but I can’t answer that question. That question is boxed up in a lot of other stuff, and I can’t open that box,” D’Onofrio told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I don’t think he’s changed; I think he’s enlightened,” D’Onofrio says. “I haven’t seen a lot of the episodes of Echo. So, in my mind, after everything goes down with Maya, he gets on a plane, and … by the end of that flight, he decides, ‘If I want to be all powerful, this is what I’m going to do.’ That’s the most I can tell you.”
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Will Connect to ‘Daredevil’
D’Onofrio originally portrayed Kingpin in the Netflix Marvel series Daredevil, which was recently deemed officially canon by Marvel Studios.
The canonization of Daredevil could not have come at a better time. Late last year, Marvel decided that the Daredevil reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, was not working.
While half of the series’ episodes were already shot, Marvel decided to pull the plug and start over.
Now, D’Onofrio revealed the team is directly connecting the new series back to the original Daredevil.
“During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now,’” D’Onofrio says. “So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing. It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons.”
D’Onofrio Thanks Kevin Feige
In addition to re-writing Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel also added Moon Knight and Loki directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead. D’Onofrio was thrilled with the choices.
“I’m a huge fan of those guys, and I talk to them all the time now,” D’Onofrio shares. “When I heard that [they were joining Born Again], I was like, ‘OK, not only are we switching things up, but the bosses are doing the right thing for us.’ They’ve given us their hottest talent, and that’s pretty cool. So the first thing I did was thank them. I thanked Kevin [Feige] for doing that and sticking with Charlie [Cox] and I. It’s a pretty amazing thing.”
While we don’t have a release date for Daredevil: Born Again, the series is expected to debut in 2025. I, for one, can’t wait.
