What’s Coming Soon at Disney?
The Disney wheel is always spinning as Imagineers plus theme parks and other parts of Mickey Mouse’s empire.
While Tron Lightcycle / Run has garnered the most headlines, plenty of other Disney attractions and experiences are in the offing.
Here are ten Disney offerings that are coming soon.
Adventureland Treehouse
Disneyland is currently going back to the future with one of its most iconic structures.
In 1962, the park opened Swiss Family Treehouse, an above-ground play area based on the 1960 Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson.
After a few decades, the experience had lost its shine. So, Imagineers rethemed it to the 1999 film Tarzan.
In fact, the updated Tarzan Treehouse opened one week after the Disney classic entered theaters.
Then, with Disney100 approaching, park officials chose to return the location to its origins.
So, a modern version of the original attraction will debut soon. This new space, Adventureland Treehouse, looks stunning!
You can safely expect this third iteration of the playground to open later this year.
Avatar Experience at Disneyland Park
We still don’t know the specifics of this particular offering, but it’s definitely going to happen.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated that the company is once again working with James Cameron on an Avatar project.
This time, the untitled Avatar experience will debut at Disneyland Park.
Hilariously, even Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock didn’t learn about it until the same time as the rest of us.
For this reason, I think it’s safe to say that this attraction remains in the earliest stages…but it’s happening!
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Cabins
Disney is currently in the process of razing many of its oldest campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.
The campground will convert part of its inventory to a Disney Vacation Club experience.
So, we’re talking about more luxurious accommodations…and newer ones at that.
More importantly, the loyal campers at Fort Wilderness can finally acquire a modest ownership interest at the resort, thereby ensuring future visits.
The new cabins here should open by the summer of 2024.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Expansion Tower
Similarly, Disney is doing the unthinkable at the Polynesian.
Disney’s first theme park hotel opened in 1971, alongside Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Those two properties have anchored Walt Disney World for more than 50 years now, but the Contemporary added something a few years ago.
That resort rebuilt part of its campus into an expansion tower in 2009.
Now, the Polynesian is following suit by creating its own expansion tower, which will open during the second half of 2024.
The one bit of sadness with this project is that it required the destruction of the iconic Luau Cove, which does break my heart.
The Disney Treasure
In 2019, perhaps no part of Disney’s Parks & Experiences empire possessed stronger momentum than Disney Cruise Line (DCL).
Just before the pandemic, Disney officials authorized the construction of three new luxury cruise ships.
Obviously, the building process slowed dramatically from 2020-2022 due to social distancing rules.
However, the Disney Wish still debuted and wowed tourists with its amenities.
Now, the Disney Treasure is nearly ready to join the DCL lineup. Disney has revealed details about the Treasure, including the appearance of its stern.
We can expect the Disney Treasure to set sail at some point in 2024.
Journey of Water | Inspired by Moana
MickeyBlog has chronicled construction on Journey of Water throughout 2023. So, we’ve known for a while that it was nearly ready.
Now, Disney has indicated that cast member previews are nearly ready to begin.
The attraction appears on schedule for an opening in time for the Disney100 celebration at EPCOT.
Frankly, some of the people reading this could experience Journey of Water within the next 30 days. It’s that close to being ready, barring something unforeseen.
King Thanos Attraction
The pinnacle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe occurred when Thanos clicked the final Infinity Stone into place and completed his Infinity Gauntlet.
After an initial failure, The Avengers managed to reset the timeline and stop Thanos from attaining power.
Recently, the MCU has updated its story to include the multiverse, an infinite series of universes.
In one of them, Thanos emerged victorious. Ever hungry for power, the so-called King Thanos is now attempting to bring other universes under his domain.
Disney California Adventure is creating a ride based on that premise. Can the greatest Avengers from across the multiverse stop the Thanos Who Won?
San Fransokyo
Here’s another change occurring at the parks soon.
A few years ago, Disney California Adventure tossed out its previous theme in favor of a new IP-focused approach.
The former themed lands seemingly vanished overnight. In their place, Disney added Pixar neighborhoods and Marvel content.
Two of the initial changes were attraction reboots, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! and the Incredicoaster.
Over time, DCA has developed a reputation as the Pixar/Marvel park.
Until now, one holdout had remained, the Paradise Pier section.
Currently, Disney is retheming that area into another Pixar themed land, San Fransokyo.
We recently learned that this location, the one with the Baymax character spot, will finish construction on August 31st, 2023!
So, you’ll be hugging Baymax at DCA in about a month!
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
I won’t relitigate this one, as you know the deal. Splash Mountain has closed at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Disney is retheming the attraction to celebrate the story of Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will open at some point during the second half of 2024.
The attraction looks spectacular thus far, and if you loved riding Splash Mountain, you’ll assuredly enjoy this updated take on the concept.
The Villas at Disneyland Hotel
Here’s the other DVC expansion tower underway. Unlike the Polynesian and Fort Wilderness, the one at Disneyland Hotel is nearly complete.
In fact, Disney has scheduled the opening date for September 28th, 2023. Yes, that’s less than two months from today!
So, what you should take from a lot of what you’re reading today is that Disney Parks and Experiences will be that much better 18 months from now!
All the company’s previous expansion choices are about to pay dividends with several exciting enhancements opening soon!
