Little Mermaid Surpasses Expectations at the Global Box Office
Things are going well for The Little Mermaid at the global box office. Disney’s live-action remake of the beloved 1989 film has now passed the $400 million mark at the global box office. A recent piece in Collider, however, takes away a bit of the luster by noting that more than half of the box office sales come from the domestic market. In addition, it should be noted that the film did cost a reported $250 million to produce.
At its current pace, The Little Mermaid is expected to bring in around $500 million globally with $228 of that from the domestic box office. That means the film has made roughly $185 overseas.
The film has been a mixed bag with critics and has a 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is fairing better with audiences and has a 94% rating. In addition, the film has earned an A CinemaScore.
Though critics seem to be growing weary of Disney’s live-action remakes, one aspect of the film that has generated praise across the board is Halle Bailey’s turn as Ariel in the film. The Little Mermaid matched the guidepost set by the live-action remake Aladdin in its opening weekend. Both films earned $117 at the domestic box office. However, Aladdin turned out to be a sleeper going on to earn over $1 billion worldwide. It is unlikely that The Little Mermaid will match this figure.
So how does The Little Mermaid stack up against some of the other live-action Disney releases? Here’s a quick snapshot!
- Dumbo – $353 million.
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $299 million
- Cruella – $229 million
- The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $215 million
- Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – $491 million
- Cinderella- $543 Million
- Alice in Wonderland – $1 billion
- Beauty and the Beast – $1 billion
- The Lion King – $1 billion.
