Orange County Teachers Bring Disney Magic To Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students In Touching Video
This has to be one of our favorite feelgood stories this week – and let’s face it, we all need a lot more of these! Students at an Orange County school for the deaf and hard of hearing received a VERY special video from their teachers this week.
The video was created to let students know how much they were missed during the school closures. Set to “it’s a small world” the 2:20 minute video features teachers in their favorite Disney-bound looks, singing, signing and smiling for students!
Check it out:
David Longo, principal of Orange County Department of Eductions Deaf and Hard of Hearing program said, “We all wanted to reach out to our students at a time when they needed it most.” He added, “This whole process has been very difficult for many of them. We had heard many comments from them about missing school and wanted to let them know we miss them, too.”
Due to the rapid nature of the school closures, many teachers were left feeling that they didn’t say good-bye to children properly. In a recent interview with Ed Source, Chris Gonzales, a teacher at the school said, “Most importantly, we wanted to say, ‘We are still here for you. See you soon,’” he said. “We wanted to send a message to our students to let them know, although we are currently divided by miles, we are still here for them whenever they need it.”
Gonzales and counsellor Kim Coronado “put countless hours” putting the video together. Longo added, “All I can say is I still cannot watch it without smiling. It’s nice to share a little humanity at this time, especially when many of our students don’t have access to communication at home. School is often that one place where they feel connected and important and we wanted to make sure they knew we were still here.”
The school serves 105 students in the 6-12th grade who live throughout Orange County which is near the Disneyland theme parks. The program offers special day classes for students as well as the chance to participate in extracurricular activities. They also offer services for young adults up to the age of 22.
