‘X-Men ’97’ Has (Already) Been Renewed For a Third Season
While Marvel Studios has struggled in live-action over the last 18 months, the studio suddenly finds itself thriving in animation.
Following last year’s well-received What If…? season 2, Marvel debuted X-Men ’97, the long-awaited continuation of the 1990s classic, X-Men: The Animated Series, this month.
The “new” X-Men series has not only struck a chord with fans of the original series but managed to bring in fans who were not yet born when the original series aired.
‘X-Men ’97’ Is a Hit
On its way to becoming the highest-rated Marvel Studios production ever, X-Men ’97 also managed to bring in 4 million viewers in its first five days of streaming. That number gave the series the biggest animated debut on Disney+ since season 1 of What If…? debuted in 2021.
Any way you slice it, X-Men ’97 is a hit.
Despite the fact that only four episodes of the animated series have aired, a second season is already in the midst of production. Perhaps even more surprising (and exciting), however, is the news that season 3 of X-Men ’97 is also in development!
Season 3 in Development
A third season of X-Men ’97 had previously been described as a possibility when showrunner Beau DeMayo was fired from Marvel Studios prior to the series’ release. At the time, it was reported that DeMayo had finished writing season 2 and had begun tossing around possible ideas for a third season.
Although DeMayo will no longer be involved in the project, according to Marvel Studios’ head of streaming and animation, Brad Winderbaum, season 3 of X-Men ’97 is in development.
“Just like the original series that was drafting so heavily from Chris Claremont’s work, we’re continuing that,” Winderbaum asserted. “We’re looking at that late ’70s, mid ’70s to early ’90s kind of era. We do start to play outside of the Chris Claremont sandbox a little bit into the ’90s, almost getting to Grant Morrison. But it’s definitely just like the OG series. It’s drafting from the stories from the books.”
If and when the third season of X-Men ’97 arrives, the series will join What If…? as the only Marvel Studios shows to receive a third season.
X-Men ’97 is streaming now on Disney+.
