Disney Lost Over $134 Million on ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’
While Marvel Studios grabbed headlines last year for the box office struggles of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumana and The Marvels, Disney had its own share of failures outside the MCU.
Perhaps most disappointing for the studio was the reception to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The long-awaited fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise saw Harrison Ford don his iconic fedora for one last adventure. Weighed down by a massive $295 million budget, Dial of Destiny only managed to bring in $384 million at the box office.

That number was a far cry from the $790 million that the much-maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull managed to deliver in 2008.
Disney Spent $397 Million Creating ‘Dial of Destiny’
According to a recent report from Forbes, Disney lost over $134 million on Dial of Destiny between the production of the film and the film’s post-production costs.
In a new filing, Disney revealed that it spent $79 million on post-production, which included the process of digitally de-aging Ford for the film. When all was said and done, the film had a budget of $397 million.

As studios typically receive half of the money that a film brings into theaters, Dial of Destiny would have delivered $192 million for Disney.
The studio did receive a tax credit for filming in the United Kingdom, which reduced their costs by $58.3 million. That credit brought the total amount Disney spent on the film down to $362.2 million.
A Loss of (At Least) $134 Million
Estimating that Disney grossed $192 million from Dial of Destiny’s theatrical run, the studio would have lost $134.2 million overall.

That number does not include marketing costs for the film. On the other hand, however, it also does not take into account merchandise and home media sales.
Nevertheless, the numbers are clear. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was a financial disaster for Disney and likely the biggest box office bomb in a year that was full of them (we will have to see the final numbers of The Marvels before making this determination).

In the end, Dial of Destiny was an unceremonious end for one of the great characters of cinema.
