Robert Downey Jr. References His “Dwindling Credibility” Following His MCU Run at the BAFTAs
Last night’s BAFTA and People’s Choice Awards were an emotional roller coaster for any Marvel fan tuning in.
Jeremy Renner appeared on stage at the People’s Choice Awards for one of his first major public appearances since his near-fatal snow plow accident last year. Giving him a standing ovation was Tom Hiddleston, who also took home an award for Loki.
During his acceptance speech, Hiddleston shouted out his fiance, Zawe Ashton, who, of course, recently starred as Dar-Benn in The Marvels.
Then, of course, there was Robert Downey Jr at the BAFTAs.
Downey Jr. Reflects on His Career
The Oppenheimer star won the Best Supporting BAFTA for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster and seemed to joke about how his time in the MCU was viewed by Hollywood.
“When I was 42, I did two films for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a civil British flare. I then played a guy named Tony in the MCU for about 12 years,” he began.
“And then recently, that dude Chris Nolan suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to perhaps resurrect my dwindling credibility. So I share this with my fellow nominees, this has been an exceptional year.”
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been lambasted by some Hollywood luminaries (including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino), Downey Jr. has always defended the MCU and his work in it.
It Doesn’t Sound Like Tony Stark is Coming Back
Talking about his “dwindling credibility” after his historic run as Tony Stark seems like a slap in the face to the MCU and its legions of fans.
Still, there is no doubt that Downey Jr.’s work in the MCU was often overlooked by both critics and his peers.
After being vindicated by his performance as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, it sounds like Downey Jr. is in no hurry to return to the MCU. In that sense, Downey’s win at the BAFTAs feels like a loss for Marvel fans.
