Zawe Ashton Talks Being in the MCU With Fiance Tom Hiddleston
Joining the cast of The Marvels and officially entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was an extra special career decision for Zawe Ashton, as it meant that she would get to share a professional space with her fiance, Tom Hiddleston.
Hiddleston, of course, has been portraying Loki in the MCU since 2011’s Thor, becoming one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Ashton, meanwhile, is an MCU newcomer, portraying The Marvels’ antagonist Dar-Benn.
“Bizarre In The Best Way Possible”
Reflecting back on her Marvel experience, Ashton called it “bizarre in the best way possible.” According to Ashton, it allowed for a deeper understanding and empathy in the duo’s relationship.
“It’s very special and very bizarre,” Ashton said. “I think bizarre in the best way possible. Like, you don’t plan for this kind of thing, you know? But I think any couple who have an understanding of each other’s work. I don’t know, just have a real privileged vantage point into what the other person has experienced and what they’ve gone through. It creates empathy, understanding, and connection.”
Interestingly, both Hiddleston and Ashton were cast as villains.
“I think we are just very lucky to have this connection where I now know what it is that he does behind closed doors on those sets,” Ashton said.
“I think any couple benefits from serendipitous things like that. But yeah, it is pretty unique to both be villains in a major franchise, I guess. [Laughs].”
Are Hiddleston and Ashton Done With the MCU?
With Loki assuming his place at the center of time and Dar-Benn meeting her end after The Marvels, it looks like both partners’ time in the MCU is over.
Still, as any Marvel fan knows, nobody is ever really dead. So, perhaps one day, the duo will get a chance to share the screen together.
