‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Gets Production Start Date
Star Wars fans were both surprised and thrilled earlier this year when Disney announced that a Mandalorian spin-off film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu was in the works.
It has been a four-year absence for Star Wars at the box office, with The Rise of Skywalker being the last film to secure a theatrical release.
In the interim, however, Star Wars has exploded on the small screen, with The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka expanding the universe in exciting new directions.
Three Star Wars Films Were Announced Last Year
Still, both Disney and Lucasfilm know that the movie theaters are where Star Wars thrives.
Last year at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm announced that three new Star Wars films were in production.
The first new film would take Star Wars fans back to the Dawn of the Jedi, with James Mangold set to direct
Dave Filoni is set to helm the second film, which will bring together characters from the Disney+ New Republic era, including the cast of The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and the upcoming Skeleton Crew.
Last but certainly not least was the announcement that Daisy Ridley would reprise her role as Rey Skywalker for a film set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
With three films finally announced, many Star Wars fans believed that these would be the next stories we saw in theaters.
‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Gets Filming Start Date
Then came the surprising announcement that The Mandalorian and Grogu were in development. Perhaps more shocking was the added detail that the film was set to begin production this year.
All of a sudden, it was The Mandalorian and not one of the three previously announced films that were poised to return Star Wars to theaters.
Well, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm are wasting no time in getting The Mandalorian & Grogu rolling. According to the FilmFilm & Television Industry Alliance’s production tracking service (via ComicBook.com), The Mandalorian & Grogu will begin shooting in Los Angeles on June 17, 2024.
With the next Star Wars movie set slated for a May 22, 2026 release, it seems as if The Mandalorian & Grogu will fill that slot.
Finally, after years of waiting, it looks like we will have a Star Wars film in theaters relatively soon.
