‘Bluey’ Was the Most Popular Program on the Streaming Charts
Last week, I mentioned how Bluey earned the title of the top show on Disney+ for the week.
Now, Disney+ gets even better news, as Bluey has claimed the streaming throne as THE most-watched streaming program for the week.
That’s right. Bluey is number one according to the Nielsen ratings!
Bluey Conquers All
The latest batch of Nielsen ratings legitimately should have brought joy to Disney executives.
I say this because Nielsen breaks streaming ratings into three categories: Originals, Acquired series, and Movies.
Disney won two of the three categories for the week. Then, in the section where it “lost,” Disney+ claimed two titles in the top five.

The company’s plan for streaming dominance seems to be going rather well.
As a reminder, we’re not talking about last week. Instead, Nielsen, in its infinite wisdom, waits a few weeks before posting streaming data.
So, the ratings we’ll discuss cover the timeframe of November 6th through November 12th.
During that week, Bluey was absolutely dominant. As a reminder, I just wrote last week that the Australian series had conquered Disney+.
Apparently, that wasn’t enough for this greedy pooch, as it has since taken over the entirety of streaming.
For the week in question, Bluey claimed 918 million viewer minutes, a staggering sum.

That’s one of the show’s best performances of 2023 to date. I presume it’s because the weather turned cold.
So, kids who were stuck inside turned to Bluey for entertainment. Hey, it could be worse! They could have watched Cocomelon instead!
Anyway, the Nielsen streaming charts work like the television charts or Billboard record sales or movie box office.
Not all weeks are created equal. Typically, a program with less than one billion viewer minutes won’t win the weekend.
Bluey did because it was a somewhat slower week overall. That statement will change in two weeks due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Until then, Disney has bookended the Acquired chart, as The Simpsons also finished in tenth place with a strong 545 million viewer minutes.
Loki Reigns Supreme
Perhaps the best news of the week for Disney+ wasn’t Bluey.
As a reminder, Disney doesn’t own that show but licenses it from Ludo Studio and the Australia Broadcasting Company.
Conversely, Disney earns all aspects of Loki, by which I mean the character, Marvel Studios, and the content.

So, Disney should feel ecstatic about the buzz that Loki built for its final episode.
The fifth episode of season two earned 560 million viewer minutes.
Then, the climactic sixth episode, the one with the slow walk to the throne sequence – if you know, you know – soared to 753 million minutes watched.

The strength of that performance made Loki the fourth most popular show on streaming for the week, giving Disney+ half the top four titles.
Presumably, Loki expanded its viewer audience for its finale as word spread of what a masterpiece it was.
Disney regrettably released The Marvels in theaters on the same date as Loki’s season (series?) finale, a critical mistake I will never understand.

Had Disney waited a couple of weeks for The Marvels, it would have the stars to promote the project.
More importantly, Loki would have rebuilt the MCU brand quite a bit.
On the other hand, if The Marvels had gone first, people would have forgotten it by the time Loki’s finale blew our minds.

Marvel took the lose/lose scenario, and I don’t get why. But Loki performed exactly as it should have.
People like me watched the final episode, felt our minds being blown, and then went back to rewatch to spot the clues we missed.
Loki was the only Disney+ series on the Originals list for the week, but when you’re number one, that’s plenty good enough.
About the Movies Chart

Two Disney+ movies finished in the top five on the charts this week, and Disney owns the license for a third title.
The Disney films are Home Alone and Elemental, which finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
They’re basically two ships passing in the night. After an absolutely sensational showing on streaming, Elemental is showing signs of slowing down.

For the week in question, Elemental claimed 352 million viewer minutes, down 73 million minutes from the previous week. It’ll probably fall off the charts soon.
Meanwhile, Home Alone has reached the holiday season when its popularity ascends.
The film’s 422 million viewer minutes should prove its baseline for the rest of the year.

As for the other film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse gained another 597 million viewer minutes.
While Sony released the film, Disney owns the rights to Spider-Man and thereby benefits from its ancillary streaming success.

In short, this was an especially strong week for Disney streaming.
Also, this is Bluey’s world. We’re all just living in it.
