‘Disturbance in the Force’ Will Go Behind the Scenes of the ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’
A new documentary is finally pulling the curtain back on the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
A Disturbance in the Force will go behind the scenes of the November 17, 1978 special and explain what really happened.
Remember the Holiday Special?
In case you have never seen the program, the Star Wars Holiday Special featured Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) flying back to the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate a holiday called Life Day.
Although the special was seen by 13 million people, it was reviled by Star Wars fans and critics alike.
Creator George Lucas, who wasn’t really involved in the special, later said, “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every bootlegged copy of the program and smash it.”
Disturbance in the Force was directed by Jeremey Coon and Steve Kozak, and it will feature interviews with Seth Green, Paul Scheer, Taran Killam, Weird Al Yankovic, Donny Osmond, Gilbert Gottfried, and Steve Binder.
Unfortunately, the documentary will not include any footage of the Star Wars Holiday Special itself based on the “request of the Emperor himself.”

While the documentary will debut at South by Southwest on March 11, you can watch the Disturbance in the Force trailer now!
Here is what the filmmakers had to say about the upcoming release:
“In 1978, CBS aired the two-hour ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ during the week of Thanksgiving that was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired. While some fans of the franchise are aware of this dark secret, bizarre two hours of television still remain relatively unknown among the general public. Simply put, we will answer how and why did the ‘Holiday Special’ get made.”
