This Day in Disney History- February 8
Welcome back to our magical travels through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 8.
February 8th may have been a slower day in Disney history, but it had some monumental events. From an honor for Walt Disney, to a brand new theme park, this day was certainly interesting. So, let’s get into it!
Walt Disney Receives Stars on Walk of Fame (1960)
On this day in 1960 Walt Disney received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Walt was given one star for his work in television and a second for his work in motion pictures.
Blackbeard’s Ghost Released (1968)
On this day in 1968, Blackbeard’s Ghost was released.
The film, which was based on the novel of the same name, told the story of the famous pirate’s ghost, who comes back to modern times.
The film starred Peter Ustinov as the titular ghost, in addition to Dean Jones, Suzanne Pleshette and Elsa Lanchester.
A Fare of the Heart Held (1974)
On this day in 1974, “A Fare of the Heart” was held at the Magic Kingdom.
The special evening Valentine’s Party featured Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Grass Toots and Gabriel’s Brass.
Disney’s California Adventure Opens (2001)
On this day in 2001, Disney’s California Adventure officially opened to guests.
The park is divided up into three area- Paradise Pier, Hollywood Pictures Backlot and Golden State.
Michael Eisner would dedicate the park saying:
“To all who believe in the power of dreams … Welcome! Disney’s California Adventure opens its
golden gates to you. Here we pay tribute to the dreamers of the past … the native people, explorers,
immigrants, aviators, entrepreneurs and entertainers who built the Golden State. And we salute a
new generation of dreamers who are creating the wonders of tomorrow”
Among the popular attractions to open with the park were California Screamin’, Grizzly River Run, and Soarin’ Over California.
Sonny With A Chance Debuts (2009)
On this day in 2009, Sonny With A Chance debuted on the Disney Channel.
The series starred Demi Lovato as Sonny Munroe, a teenage comedian from Wisconsin who joins the cast of a sketch comedy show titled So Random. The show would go on to run for 47 episodes.
