Avatar: The Way of Water Tops Box Office But Hindered By Bomb Cyclone
There’s good and bad news for James Cameron’s much-anticipated sequel to Avatar, The Way of Water. The film maintains its top spot at the holiday box office picking up an additional $19.5 million on its second Friday. However, with Storm Eliot sweeping across the US, many of those that would’ve headed to the theaters this weekend are stuck at home.
According to a recent piece in Collider, The Way of Water is projected to bring in around $55 million this weekend and $82 million across the 4-day extended weekend. This means the film will have a domestic gross of $217 million.
However, The Hollywood Reporter predicts that the bomb cyclone could mean that Christmas weekend box office revenue is down as much as 57 percent. That means that though The Way of Water continues to be the biggest draw, numbers are down due to winter storms and below zero temperatures.
For those unfamiliar, The Way of Water comes 13 years after the first Avatar film which was a massive success become the highest grossing film of all time and earning $2.9 billion at the box office. Though The Way of Water isn’t expected to match those numbers, director James Cameron has previously gone on record as saying that the film needs to make at least $2 billion in order to break even.
On the up side, as The Hollywood Reporter reminds us, there aren’t any major film releases coming out in the near future. This mans that The Way of Water should remain top film through the new year. The next big box office draw is expected to be Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which is slated to come out on February 17, 2023.
