“Amsterdam” Blends Fact With Fiction in Period Mystery Film
An intriguing movie hit theaters today. Amsterdam blends fact with fiction in a period mystery film.
Perhaps like me, you’ve seen trailers for this movie that left you wondering what it’s really about. My interest was sparked when I saw the cast, although I couldn’t quite put my finger on the plot.
Amsterdam stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. Directed by David O.Russell, Bale acted as executive producer on the project.
The idea for the film came about in an interesting way. D23 reports that Bale and Russell regularly met with each other in diners over a period of 5 years to discuss their visions.
Both had a similar goal in mind, creating likable characters they had never seen their fellow actors portray in the past. From the beginning, they envisioned a doctor, so they started from there.
Two best friends were added to form the film’s trio. The cast enjoyed collaborating together over the years leading up to the movie’s release.
Blending Fact With Fiction
The story is based on a 1933 political conspiracy that took place in the United States. Known as the Business Plot, the plan entailed overthrowing the government of President Roosevelt and installing a dictator.
The film tells the story of three friends, a doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer, who get caught up in the murder of a U.S. Senator in the 1930s. Throughout the course of the film, the trio become the prime suspects in his murder.
20th Century Studios, a production company acquired by Disney in 2019, released the film along with New Regency. Russell states that the “notion of Amsterdam is: what do you love about life and each other that you live for?”
It sounds like an intriguing piece. It will be interesting to see how Amsterdam blends fact with fiction in this period mystery, which has also been labeled as a comedy thriller.
