Avatar Rerelease Has Outperformed Mulan At Box Offices In China
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog you’ll know that last week we shared the news with you that James Cameron’s original Avatar film had been rereleased in China as theaters begin to reopen. It was doing so well in the country that it actually surpassed Avengers: Endgame to once again regain its title as the highest grossing film of all time.
Today were coming back to you with another interesting figure, according to a recent piece in The Wrap, in it’s second week of rerelease, the film has now grossed more in the past 10 days than Disney’s remake of Mulan did with Chinese audiences.
According to the report, in it’s second weekend, the 2009 James Cameron film added an additional $14 million to its box office revenue. That gives Avatar a 10-day release total of $44 million which means that it has officially surpassed the $41 million that Mulan earned in China when it premiered in theaters last September.
Though Mulan faired pretty well with US viewers, it had a lukewarm reception in China. Many in the country felt the film was an inaccurate Americanized version of what is one of the most beloved tales in Chinese culture. Big names in Chinese film including Liu Yifei and Gong Li did little to bolster the numbers and in the end the film only made about 1/3 of the box office revenue that the live-action version of the film The Lion King did.
As The Wrap tells us, the converse is true for Avatar which has always been popular with Chinese audiences. It earned an impressive $202 million at the box office during its original run and last weekend became the first Hollywood film to take the No 1 spot on the countries box office charts.in 2021.
As of going to print, Avatar now has a lifetime box office total of $2.83 billion meaning that it currently sits about $36 million ahead of Avengers: Endgame.
