Work Continues on Disney World’s Star Wars- Themed Hotel
This week we’ve written articles about experiences and attractions being put on hold at EPCOT as well as the closure of attractions including Rivers of Light, Primeval Whirl and Stitch’s Great Escape. But today we have some positive news about a Disney project that is still moving foward as planned. According to a recent piece in the Orlando Business Journal, work is continuing on the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser- a fully immersive Walt Disney World Resort which will be opening adjacent to Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Walt Disney World filed permits with Orange County on July 14th for the commencement of “Project H – installation of show set elements.” Project H has been the long-rumored name given to the Star Wars hotel which is being handled by Themeworks Inc. in High Springs. According to the portfolio for the company, previous clients include SeaWorld Orlando.
As of going to print, Disney executives are remaining pretty tight-lipped in terms of the project and no exact details of the work were included in the permit. However, Orlando Business Journal suggests that it could be related to “set pieces” which could be anything from walls, doors, columns and other environmental designs.
As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog, the new attraction/hotel hybrid (the first of its kind in the world) will have guests boarding a Halcyon starship in the world of Star Wars.
Guests choosing to stay at the starcruiser must opt into a two-day, two-night cruise-like experience. The stay will include a port day at the planet of Batuu, the setting of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios where the adventure will continue.
The image above which we took during our visit to Hollywood Studios this week shows the property starting to take shape. Just behind the construction you can see the tall spires of Galaxy’s Edge which gives you a sense of how close the Starcruiser will be to the theme park.
Disney originally said that the hotel would officially open in 2021. There have been no updates regarding the project since Disney World entered a four-month shutdown due to the COVID-19 crisis in March.
Disney is pushing some projects forward while others are being put on hold. As we reported earlier today the Mary Poppins attraction slated for EPCOT is being paused and its future remains uncertain.
