Ultimate Guide to Disney Live Action Movies
Disney has recently turned many of their beloved animated films into live action movies. These have been a hit for Disney fans all around the world. Everyone loves seeing their favorite animated character as real people, and they’ve loved the additions to each story. There is so much that has changed from when these classic movies came out that has truly transformed the way movies are made today. Let’s take a look at these Disney live action movies!
Alice in Wonderland
One of the first live action remakes was Alice in Wonderland. This was a bit different because it was a Tim Burton film. The story was changed up a lot and Alice was older than she truly is in the animated film. Even with the changes, people liked this movie and accepted it for what is was.
It’s possible the Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is what made everyone fall in love. Alice in Wonderland live action did so well that they made another film with the same actors called Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Cinderella
The next true live action movie was Cinderella – a great movie for a true start to the live action collection. Cinderella is a classic; just about everyone knows a good Cinderella story. This movie came out in 2015 with a few easily adaptable changes. Lilly James played a beautiful Cinderella.
The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book was the next live action film that Disney made in the year of 2016. Although this may be more CGI than actual live action, it still gave off the impression that the animals were real animals and the settings were real settings. Of course, Mowgli was indeed a real boy played by breakout star Neel Sethi.
Beauty and the Beast
If you look at a calendar, it looks as Disney is releasing one new live action film per year. With Cinderella in 2015, and Jungle Book in 2016, the next film to come out was Beauty and The Beast in live action form. This film was released in 2017 and was one of the biggest hits yet. Emma Watson played Belle fabulously. Beauty and the Beast live action barely changed from the original! It was almost exactly the same – just with real people of course.
Christopher Robin
This past August we were introduced to the newest Disney live action film that stole our hearts. Disney’s Christopher Robin was an animated to live action film unlike any other. Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh had many adventures back in their animated days, so there wasn’t just one film that this new movie could directly copy.
Disney had the great idea of centering the movie around a grown up version of Christopher Robin who finds the hundred acre woods again. Since Christopher Robin was recently released, we won’t spoil it – just know it’s a must see.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
In just under a month, Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will be released. Although Disney didn’t originally have their own animated film for the Nutcracker, I’d still consider this a live action remake. They are taking a classic tale (that has been a movie before – just not a Disney movie) and turning it into a real life, live action film. This is going to be the perfect movie to kick off the holidays.
Mary Poppins Returns
Another re-make that is set to come out this December is Mary Poppins Returns. Although Disney isn’t remaking an animated film in this situation, they’re still taking an original and adding a twist to it.
2019 is Going to Be HUGE!
Disney has many live action movies set to be released in 2019. More classics from the golden age include Aladdin, The Lion King and Dumbo. All next year! Our hearts can’t contain the excitement we have for these live action films. Although we don’t know much yet, we can assume that the Lion King will be mostly CGI and similar to the Jungle book – but technology can change in just four years.
Who knows – the CGI may be better by then. Disney’s Aladdin that is set to come out in 2019 was trending on the internet for a while when the casting for Jasmine and Aladdin was happening. People were going crazy to find out who their beloved street rat/princess couple would be played by.
We don’t know too much about Dumbo coming out in 2019, but the trailer recently aired and it looks a bit creepy. After seeing the trailer, and finding out it is a Tim Burton film, the creepiness makes sense. It’s just his style! Maybe Johnny Depp will appear in this Tim Burton film, too.
2020 is Going to Be BIG Too!
As of right now, Disney’s live action Mulan is set to be released the following year in 2020. Disney is also in the process of starting a live action Little Mermaid. With this movie as well, the internet was freaking out on who they’d cast as Ariel – many people think it will be Zendaya Coleman. What movies would you like to see a live action re-make of? Is it too soon to ask for a remake of Tangled or Frozen?!
