WATCH: First ‘Skeleton Crew’ Trailer Has ‘Goonies’ Vibes and ‘Captain EO’ Easter Eggs
The next chapter in the Star Wars story will be written this December when Skeleton Crew lands on Disney+. The upcoming series will return audiences to the era of the New Republic, where they will follow the adventures of a group of children who get lost in the galaxy.
Starring Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, Nick Frost, and Jude Law, Skeleton Crew was inspired by the Amblin films of the 1980’s such as Goonies and Gremlins.
“I fell in love with Star Wars when I was a 10-year-old boy,” Jude Law explained at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event. “[This] series is told from the perspective of the kids.”
Ahead of Skeleton Crew’s December 3 premiere, Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for the series.
A Galactic Coming-of-Age Story
In the clip, a group of young kids are shown, first in school and then exploring a forest. Here, they seemingly stumble upon a Jedi temple. At the end of the trailer, Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood.
While the new Skeleton Crew trailer did a good job of relaying the show’s coming-of-age story, the biggest surprise in the clip was a brief cameo.
For a brief second, a flying alien is shown in a cage. That creature is the spitting image of Fuzzball from the former Disney Parks’ attraction, Captain EO.
What Was ‘Captain EO’?
Originally opening in 1986, Captain EO was a 3D show starring Michael Jackson as the titular hero. In the film, EO and his ragtag crew are tasked with delivering a gift to The Supreme Leader. Captain EO’s team consists of Fuzzball, Idy, Ody, Major Domo, and Hooter.
The film was a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering, director Francis Ford Coppola, producer George Lucas, and Jackson.
While Captain EO was clearly inspired by Star Wars, this is the first time that there has been a clear connection between the two.
In addition to Fuzzball, Neel, who is an elephant-like alien, looks suspiciously similar to Hooter from Captain EO. A droid shown in the trailer also resembles Major Domo.
Is ‘Skeleton Crew’ Directly Connected?
While it remains to be seen if Skeleton Crew does tie into Captain EO or if the inclusion of Fuzzball is just a fun Easter egg, it was an unexpected treat to see the character pop up again. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out now!
Hopefully, we learn more when Skeleton Crew debuts on December 6.
