Do You Need to Love Star Wars to Enjoy Mandalorian?
Star Wars Knowledge Not Needed to Enjoy Mandalorian….
I just got done watching the latest chapter of the Mandalorian, and — well — it wasn’t long enough. It really bothered me.Actually, I was actually angry.
I mean, how rare is that. A weekly TV show. Keeping my rapt attention. In 2020?
Do the kids still say, “Cray”?
However, I was somewhat destined to love The Mandalorian. A born and bred Star Wars fan, it’s not a stretch for me to enjoy a Star Wars streaming show.
The Mandalorian: Star Wars Pedigree Not Required
But, there’s a fair chance that a whole lot of folks who don’t love Star Wars, who love The Mandalorian.
Don’t believe me? Just read.
Allegra Frank of Vox, wrote:
The Mandalorian is fascinating for what it adds to the Star Wars universe, while also being accessible to the more rudimentary viewer because it doesn’t rely so much on preexisting storylines or characters. Instead, the show takes the semantics of Star Wars — space battles, unique creatures, a Big Bad that a Morally Gray Good Guy needs to vanquish — and applies them to the classic TV Monster-of-the-Week model. The result is something very fun, engaging, and just Star Wars-y enough.
Check. Check. Check. And check.
Mando: Space Cowboy
And, even for this Star Wars fanatic, there is a lot to love about not seeing a Skywalker (even an adopted one) anywhere.
Meanwhile, it’s got a real serial Western-feel. Heck, Timothy Olyphant plays a space marshal in one episode.
And, as part of her guide to The Mandalorian, Frank added:
In contrast to something like Succession or The Handmaid’s Tale, The Mandalorian is rarely too layered or overly dense. There’s the overarching “Protect the Child” plot, but otherwise, most of the first season feels very self-contained.
And, thus far, so doesn’t the second season.
So, for this sleep-deprived father of three, getting 50-minutes or so of space cowboys is reason enough to recommend The Mandalorian to a non-Star Wars(y) friend.
But what do you think of The Mandalorian? Let us know in the comments?
