‘Bluey’ Beats Evil…But Not Tom Brady
After an exceptional week last time, Bluey proved human – well, canine – by dropping to third on the streaming ratings this week.
What did streaming fans prefer? People making fun of Tom Brady. Yes, I’m serious.
So, let’s talk about how Bluey beat Evil but not Tom Brady.
Bluey’s Hot Streak Continues
As mentioned, Bluey is currently THE most-watched streaming title of 2024 thus far.
That trend continued again during the most recent week on the Nielsen charts, as Bluey remains ascendant on the charts.
For the week of May 6th through May 12th, 2024, Nielsen ranked Bluey as the number three show on streaming.
Notably, the titles surrounding Bluey aren’t in the same entertainment category.
For example, the most popular program, according to Nielsen, was…The Roast of Tom Brady.
So, yeah, this week’s top competitor was a show with a bunch of celebrities and comedians telling jokes about Brady’s cheating.
Also, there was some stuff about the owner receiving massages and a former Tight End who…well, you can google it.
Suffice it to say that these two programs weren’t targeting the same demographic.
Still, Bluey technically wasn’t the most popular streaming program on a Disney service.
Instead, that honor went to Grey’s Anatomy, which benefited from the debut of season 20 episodes on Hulu.
Grey’s Anatomy earned 1.109 billion minutes for the week, right in line with the previous week’s 1.115 billion minutes.
Bluey fell right behind Grey’s Anatomy in third place with 1.091 billion minutes.
That’s down slightly from last week’s 1.181 billion minutes, but that’s a predictable decline.
Remember that we were closer to newer episodes at the time, which always causes a ratings surge.
The same thing happened with Grey’s Anatomy the last two weeks, thanks to the arrival of season 20 episodes.
Still, Bluey remains on pace for 50+ billion minutes watched in 2024.
Last year, Suits was THE most watched program with 57.7 billion minutes, with Bluey finishing second at 43.9 billion minutes.
Bluey is pacing ahead of last year, and new minisodes arrive in a few weeks!
Other Disney Streaming Hits
Disney took a goose egg on Nielsen’s Originals chart, and that statement may apply for three or four more weeks.
Unless the season finale of X-Men ’97 elevates the show back into the top 10, something that has only happened once thus far, it’ll be a minute.
Disney’s next great hope is The Acolyte, which just debuted on streaming yesterday, May 6th.
So, that’s another four weeks away. Also, there’s no guarantee about The Acolyte, although I like its chances.
Still, I do want to explain the joke in the intro. Paramount+ airs a program called Evil – it’s excellent – and it finished in second on Originals.
Overall, Evil was the number four show on streaming, which means that Bluey did, in fact, defeat Evil. Hooray for puppies!
On the Acquired chart, Disney+ and Hulu claimed six (!) more titles, giving the services eighty percent of the top 10.
Finishing in third place was Family Guy, with 751 million viewer minutes.
The Resident, the show that airs on Hulu and Netflix, gained another 642 million viewer minutes.
As a reminder, much of the traffic on these shared shows comes from Netflix, which remains the alpha of streaming.
Nielsen does a poor job of differentiating content per service. So, it simply credits both Hulu and Netflix.
More Hulu Hits…and One Movie
That statement also applies to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which managed 630 million minutes.
Then, we have a new entry I’ve never seen on the charts, Reba, the sitcom starring Reba McEntire.
I won’t lie and pretend like I knew this, but the show apparently airs on Hulu and Netflix, earning 615 million minutes.
Next, we have a Hulu exclusive, Bob’s Burgers, which locked down another 606 million minutes.
Finally, we have the frequently appearing Criminal Minds, which claimed 571 million minutes.
You can pretty much set your watch by Criminal Minds, which seemingly always snares somewhere between 400 and 800 million minutes.
People love murder procedurals. What does that say about us? I dunno, but maybe we should all pick Bluey instead?
Anyway, on the Movies chart, Disney+ only had one entry, and it’s the one you’d expect.
Moana earned a spot in eighth place with its usual 230 million viewer minutes, underscoring its steady reliability.
Alas, the rest of the Movies chart is chaotic with films like Dark Waters (?) and The Peanut Butter Falcon (???) finishing in the top ten.
Somehow, Disney keeps bringing order to this chaos, though…primarily thanks to Bluey.
