Producer Roy Conli Explains Why We Haven’t Gotten a ‘Big Hero 6’ Sequel Yet
Despite the fact that the film was a massive success for Walt Disney Animation, as Big Hero 6 gets ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary, a sequel to the film has never been made.
Since Big Hero 6 hit theaters on November 7, 2014, the film has grossed over $650 million at the box office, won the Best Animated Feature award at the 87th Academy Awards, inspired a new land at Disney California Adventure, and spawned two animated series. Along the way, Baymax has become one of Disney’s more popular characters.
Despite all this, and in spite of the fact that Disney is largely a sequel-happy studio at this point, a Big Hero 6 sequel has seemingly never been close to fruition.
Why Haven’t We Seen a ‘Big Hero 6’ Sequel?
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Big Hero 6 producer Roy Conli revealed the reason that a sequel to the film has not been developed.
“You know, we’re celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Big Hero 6 this year,” Conli said. “It’s interesting because it is really up to Don whether he wants to make a sequel to that. It was Don’s concept and idea. I always secretly urge him to do it, but we’ll see. He loves working on new property. So we’ll see what happens.”
Don Hall co-directed the original Big Hero 6 alongside Chris Williams. It sounds like the Big Hero 6 team would be on board for a sequel if Hall would agree to join.
Hopefully, Hall’s cohorts can convince him to revisit the world of San Fransokyo, and we will see Baymax and Hiro on the big screen again in the future.
