Disney Announces Upcoming Release Dates for Star Wars, Avatar and Marvel
Today, Disney has set its sights on its cinematic future with announcement that more Star Wars, Avatar, and Marvel films are heading our way in the years ahead! For all you Disney movie buffs, you’ll want to mark your calendars as we share with you what we know so far about the future of these three awesome franchises!
Star Wars
Let’s start with what we know so far about the Star Wars franchise. Fans of the films are waiting anxiously for the arrival “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” which is slated to hit theaters on December 16, 2022. However, the end of this chapter doesn’t mean the end of Star Wars cinematic releases. To the contrary as Disney announced today that three more Star Wars films have already been given the go ahead with the first slated to be released in 2022! Two more films will follow in 2024 and 2026.
Avatar
It has been 10 years since James Cameron’s box office juggernaut Avatar opened in theatres. Though fans of the Na’vi have been counting down the days until December 18, 2020 when Avatar 2 was expected to be released, Disney announced this week that the sequel is being pushed back an entire year and will not be released until December 17, 2021. Believe it or not, there is a bit of a strategy in this change. With 3 more films expect to be included in the franchise, Disney will alternate releases with Star Wars so as to not compete against itself. In addition to the 2021 release, additional Avatar films are slated to be released in 2023, 2025 and 2027.
Marvel
Though the fervor around Avengers: Endgame is still going strong, Disney is setting its sights on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the announcement today that a whopping 8 new Marvel movies are slated to hit the theaters by the end of 2022. This includes the following (as yet unnamed) releases:
- May 1, 2020
- November 6, 2020
- February 12, 2021
- May 7, 2021
- November 5, 2021
- February 18, 2022
- May 6, 2022
- July 29, 2022
Though the studio is remaining tight-lipped regarding what characters will be featured in the upcoming films, there is speculation that this could include sequels to Black Panther and Dr. Strange as well as a Black Widow feature. We also already know that the next Guardians of the Galaxy instalment is underway.
