Disneyland is Bringing Electric Cars to Autopia
Earlier this month, Disneyland announced that the classic attraction Autopia would be replacing their gas-operated cars.
No further details were available at the time of the announcement, so a concerned coalition of electric vehicle activists launched a campaign to pressure Disney to commit to electric vehicles—not hybrids. In addition, they were encouraged to phase out gasoline within two years.
The pressure campaign was successful, and Disneyland confirmed this week that it will switch to fully electric vehicles over the next 2.5 years.
Change is Coming Soon
Disneyland spokesperson Jessica Good confirmed to The LA Times that electrification “means fully electric — it does not mean hybrid or any other version of a gasoline combustion engine” and that the park “will no longer be using the current engines within the next 30 months.”
By fall 2026, Disneyland guests and employees will no longer have to worry about breathing lung-damaging exhaust while working or waiting in line for Autopia.
While these changes are taking place behind the scenes, DIsney has not announced when the reimagined Autopia will reopen.
Autopia History
Autopia opened in 1955 and quickly became a fan-favorite ride serving as a centerpiece in Tomorrowland. It aligned with the American idea at the time that gas cars and scenic highways were the future.
Nearly 70 years later, times have changed, and environmental awareness plays a much larger role in our daily lives. Disney’s switch to electric cars not only helps the Cast Members, guests, and the environment, but it also starts a shift in environmental awareness and is a great way for the public to become aware of electrification.
