DeWanda Wise Clarifies Why She Dropped Out of ‘Captain Marvel’
Actress DeWanda Wise made waves last month when the Jurassic World: Dominion star referred to Marvel’s production process as “my own personal nightmare.”
Once upon a time, Wise was lined up to play Maria Rambeau in 2019’s Captain Marvel. After signing on to play Carol Danvers’s best friend, Wise dropped out and was eventually replaced by Lashan Lynch. The latter actress would not only play Rambeau in Captain Marvel but also reprise her role in WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Marvels.
While DeWise initially stated that she had to exit Captain Marvel because her Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It was renewed for a second season, during an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff earlier this year, she told a different story.
“When I almost did ‘Captain Marvel,’ there was a crew member, because I was going down the process, and they said to me, ‘Yeah, you know how it is, these movies, you hit your mark, you say your line, you go home’ … I heard that and I was like, ‘That is my own personal nightmare.’ That sounds crazy and terrible to me.”
Wise’s comments set off something of a firestorm.
Wise Clarifies Her Comments
In a recent interview with The Direct, Wise clarified her comments regarding her Marvel exit and added some context to her original quote.
“No, but that was a funny headline. I had to exit because it conflicted with Season 2 of ‘She’s Gotta Have It.’ It was just both of those things were true at one time. You know what I mean? It was like, can—That was always my question. You know, the concern about acting in blockbusters is not exclusive to Marvel. It’s acting in blockbusters,” she explained.
While she may have had trepidation about acting in blockbusters, Wise had nothing but good things to say about some of the performances that other actors have delivered.
“I think about some of the greatest performances. I think about [how] Robert Downey Jr. is extraordinary. Like he’s extraordinary in those series. Hugh Jackman in Logan. Hugh Jackman in Logan is literally what made me want to veer into action. I was like, ‘Oh, if you can? Well, if we’re doing that then maybe I will stop doing these indie movies and see what you guys are doing over here.’ So yeah, no, it wasn’t that at all.”
Will Wise Enter the MCU After All?
While Wise has yet to appear in an MCU film, the actress would still like to play one particular character.
“[Storm] is the only Marvel character I’m interested in…it’s the only Marvel character I’ve ever been interested in. I think we’re going to single-handedly make that happen, and I thank you for that,” she said earlier this year.
With Storm set to answer the MCU soon along with the rest of the X-Men, perhaps Wise will get her chance.
