DeWanda Wise Had to Give Up Playing Maria Rambeau, But She’s Not Done With the MCU
While Lashana Lynch has now become synonymous with the MCU’s Maria Rambeau, even playing three different variants of the character across television and streaming, she was not the first actress cast in the role.
That honor would fall to DeWanda Wise, who was originally signed to play Rambeau in 2019’s Captain Marvel.
Unfortunately, at the time Captain Marvel was filming, Wise was working on Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It on Netflix. Eventually, she had to exit the Marvel project.
“I did not choose to leave,” Wise said. “Like, I would never make that choice for myself, that sounds ridiculous. You sign a contract for a TV show and it’s in first position, and that’s just a responsible… you have audience members who are like, ‘I would’ve taken a lawsuit.’ Good for you. I don’t wanna be sued! Not trying to be sued by Spike Lee and Netflix. So, you know, at the time, it was very disappointing and also difficult in that context.”
DeWise Has Her Eyes Set on Storm
While she may have missed out on playing Rambeau, DeWise now has her eyes set on playing a different Marvel character. In fact, it’s the only character she has ever really wanted to play.
“[Storm] is the only Marvel character I’m interested in,” Wise said to The Movie Dweeb. “It’s the only Marvel character I’ve ever been interested in…I think we’re going to single-handedly make that happen, and I thank you for that.”
At this time, it is unclear what Marvel’s plans for Storm are. Still, with the X-Men on the way, it seems likely we will see the elemental mutant soon.
Perhaps then, DeWise will finally get to enter the MCU.
