Disney’s ‘Wish’ Delivers Strong Ratings in Streaming Debut
Prior to its release last November, Disney believed that Wish would be the culmination of 100 years of storytelling. The crown jewel of its Disney100 celebration, the animated film followed the traditional Disney structure featuring a princess and a wishing star, and it was chock full of Easter eggs.
Leaning into the century of Disney stories that came before it, Wish introduced audiences to the Kingdom of Rosas, where they met an optimistic young girl named Asha who sensed a darkness around the kingdom’s ruler, King Magnifico.
In Rosas, citizens’ wishes are granted by the seemingly benevolent ruler. As it turns out, however, he may not be as magnanimous as he seems.
In her moment of desperation, Asha makes a fervent wish to the stars. Her plea is answered when a celestial body named Star comes crashing down to Earth.
‘Wish’ Disappoints at the Box Office
Following the film’s premiere on November 8, however, it was clear something was wrong. Wish received tepid reviews from critics who saw it early and never managed to generate the kind of buzz that Disney was hoping for.
Eventually, Wish would become just the latest in a long string of disappointments for Disney at the 2023 box office, grossing a paltry $254.8 during its run in theaters.
A Strong Debut on Disney+
Despite its poor reception at the box office, Wish may have finally found success on streaming. The animated film managed to draw 13.2 million views globally in its first five days of streaming on Disney.
That number is serviceable and puts the film behind Encanto and Frozen 2 for the third biggest premiere of a Walt Disney Animation film on Disney+.
Perhaps, like its fellow 2023 films The Marvels and Elemental, Wish will continue to find an eager audience on streaming.
