‘Wish’ Finally Passes $100 Million at the Worldwide Box Office
Disney’s latest animated film, Wish, was supposed to be a crowning achievement for The Walt Disney Company and a culmination of 100 years of storytelling.
In a story that has become all too familiar for Disney lately, Wish struggled out of the gate and opened to a disappointing opening day total of $19.7 million.
Disney’s ‘Wish’
Wish introduces the audience to the Kingdom of Rosas, where they are introduced to an optimistic young girl named Asha who senses darkness around the kingdom’s ruler.
In Rosas, citizens’ wishes are granted by the seemingly benevolent King Magnifico. As it turns out, however, he may not be as magnanimous as he seems.
In desperation, Asha makes a fervent plea to the stars. Her wish is answered when a celestial body named Star comes crashing down to the Earth.
An Uphill Battle
Competing against Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Trolls Band Together, the prospects for Wish at the box office looked bleak.
According to The Numbers, however, the animated film has shown some life and has now passed $100 million worldwide. In total, Wish has now grossed $56.1 million internationally and $49.4 domestically.
With a $200 million budget, the prospects of Wish breaking even remain bleak. Still, after a run of disappointing box office releases, including the disastrous The Marvels, Disney will likely take any good news it can get.
Wish is in theaters now.
