Iron Man’s Demise in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Was Influenced By An Iconic Marvel Death
When Tony Stark sacrificed himself to use the Infinity Stones and, in turn, defeat Thanos and save the universe, it felt like the culmination of a decade of Marvel storytelling.
The emotional stakes in the penultimate moment of Avengers: Endgame had been earned through years of storytelling that saw audiences fall in love with Iron Man and form an emotional attachment to him.
According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, however, the studio knew that it had to “earn” the moment after playing loose with character’s “deaths” in the past.
“Around the time we started working on this film, there was some sense that deaths don’t matter in our movies – Nick Fury gets shot and died in Winter Soldier and comes back in the third act, which was awesome, but is not a death,” Feige recalled.
“And people were clamoring for, not death necessarily, but stakes and real emotion. And I remember thinking, ‘Be careful what you wish for,’ as we started getting closer to this. But we never questioned it. All of the angst and all of the effort went into sticking the landing, to making it worthwhile.”
Iron Man’s Death Was Inspired By ‘Logan’
Interestingly, it was a Marvel film outside of the MCU that inspired Feige and his team to craft Iron Man’s final moments.
“We saw ‘Logan’ like the audience did, in a theater having nothing to do with the making of that film and went, ‘Oh my god, what an amazing ending for Hugh [Jackman] as this character.’ And there are only a handful of examples where an actor so associated with a character can go out perfectly. That’s what we desperately wanted to give Robert [Downey Jr.], and that was what our focus was on.”
Will Tony Star Return to the MCU?
Since Tony Stark’s death, rumors have continued to swirl that Robert Downey Jr. could somehow return to the MCU.
If Marvel were to do that, they would regain perhaps their biggest star, but they would also destroy the legacy that the MCU has built and cheapen what is one of the great moments in movie history.
In the end, Marvel should let Tony Stark’s story be and move forward, propelled by the strength of their stories.
