Take a Look Behind-the-Scenes of the New Fort Wilderness Cabins Construction
If you are a Disney World fan, then you probably have heard about the new cabins coming to Fort Wilderness this summer.
That’s right, one of the final vestiges of “old” Disney World is finally entering the modern era. In order to help create the 350 new cabins that will litter Fort Wilderness this summer, Disney turned to Orlando small business owner Joan Quiroga.
“Starting my business with my mom and overcoming my fear of heights on that first job taught me that to succeed, sometimes you have to face your fears head on,” said Juan, who runs JCQ Services. “It’s so exciting to be part of this venture. To see how it’s bringing together the expertise of local businesses like ours to create something truly exceptional for Disney.”
The Cabins Are Being Built Off Site
In a discreet warehouse just miles from Fort Wilderness, the new cabins are currently under construction. While they were designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney World’s Facility Asset Management team, it is up to Quiroga and his team to bring them to life.
By creating the cabins in Orlando, the team is assuring that Fort Wilderness will not be disrupted by the process.
“We worked to develop a pre-fabrication strategy to allow construction of the components of each cabin off-site in Central Florida. This approach assures minimal construction disruption at Fort Wilderness and assures a high level of quality in the construction of each of the new cabins,” said Dean Huspen, Executive Architect with Walt Disney Imagineering.
Additional Amenities
Like the previous cabins, the new units will accommodate six guests and provide a private patio, bedroom, and large living room. The cabins will also be dog-friendly.
New amenities in the still-under-construction cabins include a stove in the kitchen and larger floor-to-ceiling windows. There is even artwork that pays tribute to the history of Fort Wilderness.
An Eye Towards Sustainability
The cabins are being constructed with sustainability in mind. Jeff Friedrich, owner of Freidrich Watkins Company, says the process they are using limits metal waste to 1%. That waste can then be recycled.
“By using a cutting-edge machine that reads plans designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, we’ve created customized metal studs to save time and minimize waste,” Jeff said.
While the cabins are not quite finished, reservations are now open! The new units will debut in phases beginning on July 1.
