Barnes & Noble Is Adding a Disney DVD/Blu-ray Section to Its Retail Stores
The past week has been a roller coaster of emotions for those who like to have physical copies of our favorite media.
The last of a dying breed, some of us still like to have a copy of our favorite movie or television show on DVD or Blu-Ray as opposed to relying on streaming libraries. With Disney+ now actively removing content, the only way that you can know for sure that you will be able to watch your favorite media is to own a copy yourself.
Still, the advent of the streaming era is clearly here, and physical media sales are plummeting.
A Deal With Sony and the Death of the Disney Movie Club
Best Buy recently announced that it would no longer be selling physical DVDs or Blu-rays in-store or online.
Then came the news that Disney was outsourcing its entire physical media business to Sony. The strategic move by Disney was both an indictment of how far physical media sales have fallen and a testament to how flexible Disney has been with its corporate structure of late.
On the same day that Disney revealed the Sony deal, they also announced that the Disney Movie Club was being shuttered after 23 years.
After a torrent of bad news, however, those of us who like physical media have been thrown a lifeline.
Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble has announced that they will be adding a new Disney-branded section to their retail locations, which will feature a greater assortment of Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar Animation Studios, 20th Century Studios, National Geographic, and Searchlight Pictures titles on DVD and Blu-ray.
Additionally, 10 Barnes & Noble locations will feature more extensive collections of Disney films. These stores will be located in New York City, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Honolulu, HI; Anchorage, AK; Orlando, FL; and San Antonio, TX.
According to Barnes and Noble, other locations are being reviewed for future expansion.
“Our customers have told us that they want more selection and variety in our DVD and Blu-ray assortments. We are fully committed to offering our shoppers a best-in-class assortment, and we are working with Disney to expand and enhance our offerings from their catalog in all stores,” said Barnes & Noble Music & Video Category Manager Crissi Bariatti.
