Deadpool Co-Creator Rob Liefeld is Retiring From the Character
After 33 years, Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld is stepping away from the comic book franchise.
Liefeld, who co-created the Merc with the Mouth alongside Fabian Nicieza, announced in an Instagram post earlier this week that he was retiring from the character after one final story.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liefeld explained the thought process behind his decision.
“About 10 years ago, I really felt like I was in a groove, and in my mind, I was going to do this till I was 70. But the eyes and the hands, and the aches and the pains — they have a different timetable, I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older. The last year’s worth of work was the hardest to produce,” he said.

The End of an Era
Liefeld has worked on numerous Deadpool comics since the character’s debut in 1990. Interestingly, the writer believes that his upcoming project “would be an expensive story to adapt.”
When discussing the end of his Deadpool run, Liefeld talked about going out on his own terms.
“I can’t continue to grind like this, so why not make the last grind something memorable? It’s just a function of, the eyes and the hands have to cooperate with your ambitions, and I can sense that this is getting harder and harder. Why not just put my own guardrails up and deliver it on my terms?”
Liefeld is Excited For ‘Deadpool 3’
Outside of the comic books, Liefeld has been a big proponent of Deadpool’s film franchise. Having followed along with Deadpool 3′s production, he can’t help but be excited.
“I saw some crazy [stuff], and none of that has made its way out. I was really excited by what I was seeing. Fans want Deadpool 3 to represent a turning point for Marvel. I’m really hoping that this takes Marvel into new heights and puts them on a new direction. I’m as excited as everybody else.”
Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on July 25, 2024
