James Cameron Says He Already Has Ideas For ‘Avatar 6’ and ‘Avatar 7’
James Cameron may still be putting the finishing touches on Avatar 3, but the visionary director is already thinking ahead to Avatar 6 and 7.
In an interview with People during last weekend’s Saturn Awards, Cameron discussed the idea that Avatar stories could continue to be told even after he is long gone.

“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point. I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”
The World of ‘Avatar’ Continues to Expand
Avatar fans had to wait 14 years for Cameron to release a second film in the franchise, but it was worth the wait. Avatar: The Way of Water not only became the third-highest-grossing film ever, but it also proved to all the doubters that Avatar was a viable franchise.

Following the film’s almost unprecedented success, Disney quickly announced that Avatar 3, 4, and 5 would be coming to theaters, with the next installment set to land in December 2025.
Still, as Cameron pointed out, Avatar is still a “young universe.”

According to the director, if any creator wants something to remain a cultural landmark, “you have to pour all your heart and energy into it.”
Finding a Successor
While it sounds like the world of Avatar will continue to expand in exciting ways, as Cameron gets older, he may have to pass the baton to a successor. Previously, Cameron has said that he needs to train a director to succeed him because he wouldn’t be able to muster “the amount of energy” required to take the reigns.

“I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this,” he said.

With Avatar 5 not set to hit theaters until 2031, Avatar 6 and 7 are still endeavors for the distant future. It is interesting to hear, however, that Cameron believes the world of Avatar could continue indefinitely.
