Here Are the Other Disney Releases of 2024
Sure, we care the most about Disney’s theatrical releases, as they garner most of the headlines.
But the brutal truth Hollywood hates to admit is that you watch most movies for the first time at home or on your phone somewhere, not the theater.
This reality explains the ascension and dominance of Netflix as well as why Disney got into the streaming business.
While the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes of 2023, slowed the content machine, Disney still plans to entertain subscribers throughout this year.
Here are the other Disney releases of 2024, the ones you’ll watch on Hulu and Disney+.
Self Reliance – January 12th on Hulu
So, I can’t post the trailer for this one since it’s got lots of swears.
However, I can sell you on the premise quite easily. Did you watch New Girl and/or Brooklyn 99?
The male leads from those two shows appear in a wild comedy that reunites writer/director Jake Johnson with his buddy, Anna Kendrick.
They worked together in a delightful movie, Drinking Buddies, that you didn’t see but I did.
In Self Reliance, Johnson gets tricked into joining a kind of reality competition wherein other people try to kill him.
The catch is that they can only assassinate him when he’s alone so he spends part of the story convincing friends he needs them to stay with them.
Once that fails, he turns to Kendrick’s character, who also claims to be playing the same game. And sparks fly while both try to escape their doom.
So, Self Reliance is part romantic comedy and part survival film. It looks great.
The Space Race – January 13th on Disney+ and Hulu
The latest National Geographic project will debut on Disney+ and Hulu next week.
This documentary covers some of the same ground as Hidden Figures in that it highlights African Americans whose contributions proved essential to the Space Race.
National Geographic documentaries are always stellar, and as a superfan of Hidden Figures, I cannot wait for this one.
Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds – Spring on Disney+
If you know the name Hideo Kojima, you’ve already decided to watch this one.
So, I’ll talk to everyone else. Kojima is pretty close to the Steven Spielberg of video game storytellers.
His most vital work involves the Metal Gear franchise, which carries his stamp throughout the games.
More recently, he wowed fans with Death Stranding. Now, we’ll learn how the creative process works for the visionary game director.
This one’s admittedly kinda niche, but if you’re in, you are VERY in.
Kojima may be the single largest reason why Sony sells more consoles than Microsoft.
Child Star – TBA 2024 on Hulu
Demi Lovato has taken on a directorial role for the first time with this project.
Child Star will “deconstruct the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most famous former child stars.”
That’s a subject Lovato knows exceptionally well from their own personal experience.
So, they should have a strong storytelling narrative for what it’s like to grow up in the public eye.
Dust – TBA 2024 on Hulu
The dust bowl takes on an entirely different meaning in this 1930s horror film.
A woman grows convinced that she is receiving threats from…dust storms.
Personally, when I hear that description, I think she’s inhaled too much of the dust, but this is still a story you may want to watch.
The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach joins Sarah Paulson and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford on the project.
The Greatest Hits – TBA 2024 on Hulu
Black Widow fans, take note! The writer of that film has now created a romantic musical that’s basically a more melodic take on Outlander.
A music fan discovers that listening to the right soundtrack can transport her back in time to a place where she meets the potential love of her life.
However, in between these visits, she meets a timeline-appropriate potential paramour.
Should she keep traveling back to the days before microwave ovens and medicines that can cure disease, or should she do the obvious thing?
Stay tuned!
PS: This plot shares some surface similarities with Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho…but also Bioshock Infinite. Read into that what you will.
In the Blink of an Eye – TBA 2024 on Hulu
Okay, everything else we’re about to discuss lacks a precise release date.
In the wake of the strikes, Disney executives took an Etch-a-Sketch to the previous release schedule.
Given the dearth of viable titles remaining on the schedule, everything I list here should come out in 2024. The only question is when.
In the Blink of an Eye should grab your attention as a Pixar film.
Director Andrew Stanton of WALL-E and Finding Nemo fame has returned to live-action releases.
That didn’t work out well for him last time, as John Carter bombed at the box office even though I thought it was pretty good.
In this new project, Stanton tells an interconnected, multigenerational story about the “history of the world.” So, it’s not lacking ambition.
The project stars Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs, while Stanton has cited source material as Interstellar, 2001, and…Magnolia.
So, that sounds impossible, and I’m in. However, I can’t shake the feeling that if it were a better movie, it’d gain a theatrical release.
As you know, Disney doesn’t have much this year.
Nightbitch – TBA 2024 on Hulu
The always-delightful Amy Adams returns to Disney in this title, which is what my friends used to derisively call Night Ranger.
Sister Christian has nothing to do with this story, though. Instead, it’s about a new stay-at-home mom who discovers she sometimes transforms into…a dog.
This is either gonna be spectacular or terrible. For what it’s worth, the book that provides the source material is quite well-regarded.
O’Dessa – TBA 2024 on Hulu
Hollywood needs more rock operas.
Hulu will provide one in 2024. Even better, it will star Sadie Sink of Stranger Things and the always-delightful Regina Hall.
Sink portrays a postapocalyptic farm girl who leaves everything she’s ever known behind to retrieve a lost family heirloom.
Along the way, she must sing a song that will save her true love’s soul. It…sounds a bit convoluted, but so is Flash Gordon.
I mean, is he space captain or the quarterback of the New York Jets? It can’t be both!
Prom Dates – TBA 2024 on Hulu
This one’s the easiest to describe of anything listed here, which is typically a good sign.
Two teenagers promise to have the perfect prom experience.
Sadly, those plans seemingly collapse when both of them lose their dates the week of the prom.
I’ll bet everything works out in the end.
Aside: if you enjoy films of this kind, you should also check out Banana Split, which is currently streaming on Hulu.
Also, please understand that the Disney+ release, Prom Pact, and the Netflix title, The Prom, are entirely different titles.
Suncoast – TBA 2024 on Hulu
A few years ago, Pop released an unheralded sitcom about trailer trash living called Florida Girls. And it was brilliant!
Now, the co-star and writer of that project, Laura Chinn, makes her feature film debut with Suncoast.
The movie tells the story of a teen girl who travels with her mother to the specialized facility that will take care of her brother.
Along the way, she encounters an activist played by Woody Harrelson (!), and they start to protest various inhumane medical practices.
Chinn based this story on events from her upbringing. So, it should be personal and poignant. Also, she’s really, really funny.
The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat – TBA 2024 on Hulu
Okay, don’t let the name fool you. This has nothing to do with Diana Ross or her musical group, nor does it involve the Supreme Court.
Instead, this adaptation of a popular 2013 tells the story of a group of female friends who call themselves The Supremes.
They’ve been through trials and tribulations together for decades now, but recent challenges upset the group dynamic and threaten their future.
This project has been among the buzziest streaming exclusives since its announcement.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney flipped this one to a theatrical release, something that happened with the surprise hit, The Boogeyman, in 2023.
Tiger – TBA 2024 on Disney+
I’m thinking of this one as Animal Kingdom: The Movie.
Tiger signifies the latest in a line of Disneynature films. The setting for this one is Asia, where tigers look gorgeous and do tiger things.
I don’t know anything specific here, but as the commercials point out, tigers are grrrrrrreat!
Young Woman and the Sea – TBA 2024 on Disney+
Here’s the only holdover from last year’s article.
As I mentioned at the time, the story here centers on the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
This feat occurred in 1926, but nearly 100 years later, we get Daisy Ridley doing it instead.
UPDATE FOR JANUARY 26th: According to Deadline, this film may actually receive a theatrical release during the summer of 2024!
