The Other Disney Movies You Can Watch in 2023
I recently discussed all the Disney-produced movies debuting in theaters in 2023.
However, as we all know by now, theatrical releases represent only part of the big picture for Disney now.

Plenty of other titles like Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted never played in theaters, but Disney fans loved them anyway.
So, let’s talk about the other side of the coin today, the titles debuting on streaming services.

Here are the other Disney movies you can watch in 2023!
Peter Pan & Wendy (Disney+)
You don’t need to be much of a Disney fan to know what this is.

Photo: Disney
Later this year, Disney will release a live-action remake of the classic 1953 animated movie, Peter Pan.
All you need to know about this one is that Disney has cast Jude Law as Captain Hook and Jim Gaffigan as Smee.

Also, ABC/Freeform superstar Yara Shahidi portrays Tinkerbell. So, this one looks quite good on paper.
Aladdin: Live from the West End (Disney+)
Disney has filmed a live performance of the hit Broadway play, Aladdin.

Photo: Disney
Yes, that’s a Broadway musical based on a movie that will now become a taped performance on Disney+ that Disney is calling Live for some reason.
Don’t allow the insane specifics to bog you down here. It’s the Broadway play, Aladdin! And you can watch it at home.

Disney+ already struck gold with Hamilton. Now, your subscription will pay for this presentation as well!
Prom Pact (Disney+)
Andi Mack herself, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, is preparing to follow in the footsteps of other Disney Channel favorites and become a lead actress in films.
Lee takes a strong step forward with this unlikely romantic comedy about a feminist who rails against the patriarchy and heteronormative relationships.
Then, she meets a cute boy, and you can guess what happens next.

Another Disney Channel fave, Milo Manheim, plays the cute boy. You may remember him from the Zombies franchise and, more recently, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.
World’s Best (Disney+)
Have you watched Ghosts, the CBS show that’s also on Paramount+? If so, you know how funny Utkarsh Ambudkar is.

Photo: Deadline
The actor from The Dropout has sold Disney+ on a personal project, one he created and co-wrote. Ambudkar will also co-star in this story, World’s Best.
The concept here is adorable and rife with comedic potential.

Quasi (Hulu) – April 30th
We’ve got a couple of Hulu releases of note coming in 2023 as well.

Photo: THIERRY CHESNOT/GETTY IMAGES
Quasi will appeal to Broken Lizard fans, which means I’m here for it.
If you’re unfamiliar with Broken Lizard, they’re the comedy team responsible for the Super Troopers franchise and Tacoma FD.
This story spoofs The Hunchback of Notre Dame, at least vaguely.

A Quasimodo-like character longs for love and respect. Alas, his life grows complicated when the King of France tells him to kill the Pope.
Then, the Pope tells him to kill the King of France. What will Quasi do?

I doubt the answer is for him to sing The Bells of Notre Dame, but you never know.
Dashing Through the Snow (Disney+, December)
Director Tim Story has helmed the Fantastic Four and Ride Along franchises, making him one of the most bankable people in the industry.

Photo:WhatsonDIsneyplus
Now, he’ll work for Disney+ on a holiday movie coming in December. And the cast is top-notch!
Ludacris, Lil Rel Howery, and the MCU’s Teyonah Parris will lead the cast in this story about a police officer who hates Christmas due to a childhood incident.

Photo:WhatsonDIsneyplus
Over the course of one fateful night, he’ll – you guessed it! – learn the true meaning of Christmas as he presumably dashes through the snow.
Yes, I know the whole thing sounds cheesy, but cheesy is good for a Christmas movie!

I say that as something of an expert, having watched literally everything on Hallmark Channel for the past decade.
The Boogeyman (Hulu)
Have you ever heard of a horror writer named Stephen King? Oh, you have? Good.

Well, Mr. King wrote a short story called The Boogeyman 50 years ago for a magazine called Cavalier.
The author later included the work in his collection of short stories, Night Shift. Fun fact about The Boogeyman: it’s my book-loving wife’s favorite Stephen King story.

Later this year, Hulu will air an adaptation of this story about a widower whose daughters beg him to snap out of his sorrow long enough to notice an evil presence in the house.
Madison Hu will star in the film. She’s the Disney Channel actress from Bizaardvark who isn’t Olivia Rodrigo.

Disney isn’t great about timelines for most of its streaming service releases. However, The Boogeyman sure sounds like an October release to me.
Chang Can Dunk (Disney+)
I don’t know who Chang is, but I’m very proud of him.

Photo: Disney
Actually, Chang Can Dunk will sound familiar to fans of all things Disney+.
A popular series on the streaming service, Big Shot, tells the story of a women’s high school basketball team.

Photo: Disney
Chang Can Dunk takes a similar approach, as the title character is an underrated 16-year-old athlete with hoop dreams.
Chang decides that he can prove he’s better than the school’s best player AND get the girl if he can just learn to dunk.

Good luck, Chang! The movie’s title tells me you’ve got a good shot!
BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star (Disney+)
During 2022, Disney+ secured a deal to host plenty of BTS content just as rumors swirled that the band might break up.

(Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images for SiriusXM)
For Disney, this move qualified as a coup. For BTS’ production company, it was a desperate decision to ensure the business wouldn’t go broke if BTS went on hiatus.
Since I’m not a teen girl, I’m not the expert here, but my understanding is that BTS is on some sort of hiatus in 2023 and 2024.

Photo: CNN
As such, this docuseries represents the only chance at new BTS content for a while.
Young Woman and the Sea (Disney+)
If nothing else, you gotta give this film credit for its clever spin on Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.
This story involves a different historical icon, Gertrude Ederle.
The Gold Medal-winning swimmer received even more acclaim when, in 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Daisy Ridley, Rey herself, plays Ederle in the film.
Hollywood has been trying to make this movie for a decade. So, it’s nice to see the project arriving on Disney+ this year.

Out of My Mind (Disney+)
The other inspirational Disney+ story this year is Out of My Mind, based on the Sharon Draper young adult novel.
The story centers on Melody, a girl who has cerebral palsy. Her condition prevents her from speaking, moving, or even communicating her thoughts.

Photo: whatsondisneyplus
The educational system misidentifies Melody as mentally challenged when, in truth, she’s brilliant.
Thankfully, when Melody reaches fifth grade, a permanent teacher’s aide recognizes her gifts.
Melody joins the Whiz Kids, a trivia team, and becomes one of the best players.

Photo: whatsondisneyplus
Meanwhile, Melody’s home life suffers when her parents have a healthy baby sister, who makes Melody jealous.
The trivia team and sibling stories in the book conclude in genuinely shocking fashion, and I’m hopeful that the Disney+ adaptation keeps this plot.
Out of My Mind is inspirational in a decidedly unique way, challenging people’s notions about the capabilities of the disadvantaged.
This could be an important film and Disney’s latest demonstration of believable representation.

Descendants 4 (Disney +)
What if you wanted to make a Descendants sequel but could no longer afford the cast?
That’s the challenge Disney faced in producing Descendants 4, the latest entry in this wildly lucrative franchise.

Photo: skillastics.com
Seriously, for a time, you couldn’t walk in a Hot Topic in North America without roaming through multiple aisles of Descendants merch.
Now, Disney starts anew with new characters Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, the daughter of Cinderella.
As far as I can tell, the only returning character is Uma, Ursula’s daughter.
The decision to restart the franchise comes with a fair amount of controversy.
The original cast disliked the idea of continuing without the late Cameron Boyce.

Even so, this franchise generates too much revenue for Disney to abandon it. I hope they pay proper tribute to the departed characters, though.
