Vincent D’Onofrio Has Pitched His Own Kingpin ‘What If…?’ Episode

There was a time when Vincent D’Onofrio thought his Marvel journey had come to an end.

After portraying Kingpin in 27 episodes of Netflix’s Daredevil, the rug was pulled out from underneath the actor when Marvel decided to cancel all of the Netflix Defenders Saga series.

With the canonicity of Daredevil in doubt and Marvel Studios producing their own television shows for Disney+, it looked like D’Onofrio had been sidelined by the changing times.

Then, something interesting happened.

Kingpin’s MCU Return

D’Onofrio officially entered the MCU’s main timeline for 2021’s Hawkeye, serving as the series’ ultimate antagonist.

With the subsequent release of Echo, D’onofrio established Kingpin firmly as an MCU character.

Then came the news that the creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again has led Marvel to deem the entire Defenders Saga as canon. Now, Kingpin is looming large over the MCU’s future.

A Darker Kingpin?

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, however, Vincent D’Onofrio shared that he would like to explore a darker side of Kingpin in an episode of What If…?

“I would love to do, like a, ‘What If…?’ kind of Fisk story. I would just like to explore him in a, outside of the usual teaming up of villain and superhero. I’d like to see a truly more realistic version, kind of like what they did with the Joker … A more interior approach and you know, 10 times darker than anything we’ve done with him before. You know, exploring that would be really interesting.”

For fans of Daredevil, it is hard to imagine a Kingpin “10 times darker.” Still, however, D’Onofrio’s idea of exploring Fisk’s inner world would be a new direction for the character, albeit one that was touched upon in Echo.

Marvel fans will see Kingpin again when Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
