Wyatt Russell Reveals When ‘Thunderbolts’ Will Start Filming
While Marvel Studios will slow down its output pace next year, the MCU is still set to expand in exciting ways in 2024 and beyond.
One of the most anticipated films on the docket is Thunderbolts, which will see the formation of a team of anti-heroes and former villains.
Under the purview of Thunderbolt Ross, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will assemble a new squad comprised of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell).
A Series of Delays
Although Thunderbolts was initially supposed to hit theaters in July of 2024, the film was pushed back until December 2024. Then, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a halt.
On May 26, 2023, production on Thunderbolts was paused until the strikes ended. With Disney and Marvel still playing catch up, Thunderbolts was delayed again until July 25, 2025.
When Will Filming Begin on ‘Thunderbolts’
While filming on Thunderbolts has yet to commence, Wyatt Russell, who is set to reprise his role as U.S. Agent, says that filming will start soon.
“There’s so much to play with John, and there’s so much more to do with John. I’m so lucky to get to work with the kind of talent that I’m going to work with when Thunderbolts starts up in March or April.”
A Different Kind of Marvel Movie
According to Russell, Thunderbolts will differentiate itself from other superhero movies.
“It just feels like we’re going for something that has depth and something interesting to theorize about beyond just flying around and doing superhero stuff,” he said.
With superhero fatigue, the constant topic of conversation these days, a Marvel film that shies away from traditional hero troupes may be just what the doctor ordered.
Thunderbolts will hit theaters on July 25, 2023.
