Emma Stone Didn’t Know Marvel Considered Bringing Gwen Stacey Back
Spider-Man: No Way Home was lauded by fans and critics alike for successfully bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider-Men.
The film was a true love letter to the generations of fans who grew up loving Spider-Man, whether they saw Sam Rami’s trilogy in theaters or discovered the character when Tom Holland assumed the role in the MCU.
In addition to Garfield and Maguire, the film saw Alfred Molina reprise his role as Doctor Octopus from 2004’s Spider-Man 2, and Willem Dafoe return as the Green Goblin. Additionally, Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), and Jamie Fox (Elctro) returned to create a true rogue’s gallery of villains.
Marvel Considered Bring Other Characters Back
While No Way Home was chock full of cameos and returning characters, according to the recently published MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, at some point in time, Marvel Studios was considering bringing back Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kristen Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson and Sally Field’s Aunt May for the film.
Marvel ultimately chose not to bring the characters back as they “felt the story was already overstuffed.”
Emma Stone Didn’t Know
While on the red-carpet premiere of Poor Things, Stone was asked about the news that Marvel had considered having her return. As it turns out, Stone had no idea.
“I have never heard that before,” Stone said. “This is awesome. This is a big moment for me. Thank you for telling me.”
Gwen Stacy’s Presence Was Felt
Though Stone did not appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, her presence was felt. Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was still reeling from the guilt of being unable to save Gwen Stacy at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Fans and critics highlighted Garfield’s performance and character development as highlights of the film.
Ultimately, Garfield somewhat redeemed himself when he saved the MCU’s MJ from falling to her death.
Although Spider-Gwen was omitted from No Way Home, perhaps we have not seen the last of Emma Stone’s character.
With Secret Invasion on the horizon, the multiverse is set to collide once again. There is no telling who we may see.
