Disney Falls from the Top Spot on Streaming
For the first time in six weeks, a non-Disney film finished in first place on streaming.
Still, Disney+ executives are probably happy about the latest batch of ratings anyway. I’ll explain.
Disney Movies Remain Popular on Streaming
As the chart shows, a Netflix comedy about middle-aged men topped the Movies list.
In the process, Disney fell out of the top spot on the Movies chart for the first time since Labor Day.
Previously, Haunted Mansion had claimed the top spot for two consecutive weeks.
Alas, the film dropped from 656 million viewer minutes last time to 413 million minutes this time.
In other words, about 5.5 million people watched the film the previous week, but the total dropped to 3.5 million for the week in question.
Also, as a reminder, Nielsen delays its charts by a month. So, we’re looking at the data for the week of October 16th – October 22nd. Yes, that’s prime Halloween season.
In a perfect world, I would have liked Haunted Mansion to hold better than this at Halloween time. Alas, it’s no Elemental…
Yes, the beloved Pixar film has once again defied expectations.
For the week in question, Elemental finished second on the Movies Chart, which means it’s now earning more viewers than Haunted Mansion.
That shouldn’t happen with an older film on the charts relative to a newer one, but Elemental keeps defying expectations.
Elemental registered 540 million viewer minutes the previous week and stayed in the same range at 494 million minutes this time.
In other words, new audiences are discovering Elemental each week, and it’s heartening to see. Score this round for Pixar quality!
Disney also claimed one other spot in the top ten, as Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas gained another 239 million minutes in rewatches.
As a reminder, that was the same weekend that it finished in the top five at the box office. People really loooove this film.
Surprisingly, we still haven’t tracked Hocus Pocus on the list this Halloween, though.
Disney Claims Several Streaming Hits
Last week, I mentioned an oddity on the Acquired chart. Nielsen listed the new Goosebumps series on Disney+ on this chart, which was wrong.
Well, Nielsen has since corrected their charts. So, Goosebumps debuts in third place on the Originals chart with 594 million viewer minutes.
Right behind it is the other huge hit on Disney+ lately. Loki claimed another 525 million viewer minutes for this particular week.
We’re halfway through the second season at this point, which means it’ll probably make at least four more appearances on the chart.
Finally, on the Acquired chart, Disney claimed its expected two spots on the list.
Bluey spiked to 860 million viewer minutes, which makes me wonder if teachers are just playing this in class to pass the time.
Also, The Simpsons rode a wave of Treehouse of Horror adulation to 491 million viewer minutes.
