Haunted Mansion Wins the Week
While Haunted Mansion may not have torn up the box office, it’s proven quite popular on streaming.
Haunted Mansion has topped the Movies charts on the Nielsen ratings for the second consecutive weekend.
That’s not Disney’s only good news, either. So, let’s talk streaming ratings!
Everybody Loves Disney+ Movies
As a reminder, Nielsen doesn’t publish streaming ratings until a month after the fact.
So, the week we’re about to discover covers Monday, October 9th through Sunday, October 15th.
For the fifth straight week, a Disney title finished atop the Movies chart on the Nielsen ratings.
After Haunted Mansion kicked off the month of October with a win last time, it repeated as champion with 656 million viewer minutes.
We can extrapolate that about 5.5 million people watched Haunted Mansion during that week, which is remarkable.
I say this because Haunted Mansion only earned $67.7 million in North American theaters.
While Hollywood lies about this total religiously, the average movie ticket costs at least $11 in late 2023.
During its entire theatrical run, Haunted Mansion sold at most 6.2 million tickets in North America.
After two weeks on streaming, 13.7 million people have watched Haunted Mansion. So, the film is finding an audience.
Had Disney and other studios ended the SAG-AFTRA strike in mid-July – or stopped it from happening altogether – Haunted Mansion might have done better in theaters.
Ah well. What’s done is done.
In other Disney film news, Elemental continues to perform extraordinarily well.
The film finished in third place with 540 viewer minutes.
A fellow MickeyBlog writer recently indicated their family had Elemental on a loop. They’re not the only ones.
Finally, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas actually gained viewers with 280 million viewer minutes. That’s VERY impressive.
Loki Improves and Other Disney Streaming Updates
Last week, I mentioned how Loki’s season premiere hadn’t reached the levels of season one.
Obviously, that’s to be expected, at least to some degree, since Loki aired during the heart of the pandemic when people were trapped inside.
Still, lots of Hollywood insiders eyed Loki’s second week on the streaming charts with intrigue.
I’m happy to report a solid improvement. The series earned 588 million viewer minutes during its first full week on the charts.
As a reminder, last week’s 446 million only included Thursday-Sunday numbers, at least for the season premiere.
So, we’re tracking an upward trend. The Marvel series will likely maintain or increase its viewer totals for the next four weeks, leading to the season finale.
As a reminder, that climactic episode is currently available on Disney+ and definitely one you’ll want to watch.
Overall, I’ve found the second season of Loki exceptional and highly recommend the series to everyone, not just Marvel/comic book fans.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Disney’s other two popular Originals, Ahsoka and Only Murders in the Building, were heading to a finish.
Now that their seasons have concluded, they’ve fallen off the charts. That’s typically what happens in the highly competitive Originals category.
A show is hot while new episodes are airing. Once the season ends, binge-watching will sustain the viewer totals for another couple of weeks.
After that, the series will typically vanish until the next season ends. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
Disney streaming shows are especially stereotypical in this regard. We can safely expect Loki to follow that trend.
You’ll Get Goosebumps
Sometimes, Nielsen ratings don’t make much sense, at least in terms of where it categorizes some titles.
Disney did have another original series that debuted during this timeframe.
For no apparent reason, Nielsen has listed it in on the Acquired chart instead.
The show is Goosebumps, which garnered 553 million viewer minutes.
Notably, that’s actually a BETTER debut than Loki managed. Sure, it was Halloween, but Disney+ executives must have been thrilled with this result.
Goosebumps had released half of its episodes during the week in question, which partially explains why it matched Loki…but still. That’s a very strong showing.
Also, as usual, Bluey earned a spot in the top three with another 781 million minutes.
I suspect you’re probably starting to realize just how dominant it is on streaming.
Finally, as I mentioned as a likelihood last time, The Simpsons has returned to the Acquired charts. It was Treehouse of Horror season, after all.
For the week in question, the show earned 447 million viewer minutes. That’s a LOT of Kang and Kodos. But it’s never enough for fans like me.
