Could Disney Make a ‘Tron’ Animated Movie?

When you think of Disney’s biggest franchises, you likely imagine Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Toy Story, or Frozen. Perhaps one IP that we may have to start adding to that list, however, is Tron.

Despite the fact that Tron has never had an overly successful movie at the box office, the franchise has amassed quite a cult following over the last 41 years.

Since the original film’s release, the franchise has seen Tron: Legacy released in 2010, E-ticket attractions created for Shanghai Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the animated Tron: Uprising series, and a third Tron film. Tron: Ares, on the horizon.

Could a Tron Animated Film Be in the Future?

While we know that a third installment in the Tron franchise is in the works, in a recent interview with Colllider, Disney’s Creative Chief Officer Jennifer Lee was asked about a possible Tron animated film.

While the Frozen screenwriter admitted that there was nothing like that in the works, she seemed genuinely excited by the idea.

“You know, here’s what you can say back to him, that I will promise to do at my next directors’ lunch. Once a month, I just have lunch with all the directors together, and I’m gonna say, ‘There has been a request. Is there anyone here, who has been dreaming of that to happen?’ We’re filmmaker driven, so then I can blame them, if it doesn’t happen. No, I’m teasing. Just tell him that I’m gonna write that down and bring that to them. Unfairly, I haven’t done that yet, so I will. I love that.”

A Burdgoning Franchise

First off, what a perfect response by Lee.

Secondly, while I don’t know that the demand for a Tron animated film is high enough to warrant the film’s creation, the fact that Lee didn’t dismiss the idea out of hand shows how invested Disney is in the Tron franchise.

What happens next with Tron will be interesting. If Disney can develop the franchise into a “tentpole” status, the entire company will be better off.
