Hercules Shows Some Scientific, Planetary Facts
Greek mythology is a group of myths told by ancient Greeks to explain the world around them. However, Disney’s Hercules shows some scientific facts, even though it’s based on myths.
Disney’s Retelling of Hercules
The 1997 Disney animated film, Hercules, retells Greek mythology and focuses on its primary characters. Fans encounter Hercules himself, the gods of Olympus, and Hades throughout the beloved movie.
The plot follows Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera, as he discovers his destiny and immortality. It is a story of triumph, love, hope, and victory.
Throughout the film, Hades attempts to take over the gods of Olympus by releasing the Titans during a rare planetary alignment. This is his prime opportunity to take over the universe!
The Planets Align
However, did you know that the planetary alignment reflects some scientific and historical accuracy? Although a planetary alignment may not cause a catastrophic event, Hercules accurately portrays the number of planets known at the time.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum states that ancient Greeks only knew of five planets during this time. Those planets were Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
If you watch the scene where the planets align in Hercules, you notice the film shows six planets. Therefore, Earth is the sixth planet known to ancient individuals.
Disney’s Scientific Accuracy
So, just like typical Disney fashion, the writers pay extremely close attention to detail. Look for this scientifically accurate detail as Hercules shows a glimpse of Greek history.
