This Day in Disney History- October 22
Welcome back to our magical journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- October 22.
October 22nd was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the announcement of a new Magic Kingdom sponsor, the beginning of the 21st Century, and the debut of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios show! So, let’s get started!
Disney and Florida Citrus Commission Sign Agreement (1969)
On this day in 1969, Disney and the Florida Citrus Commission (FCC) signed a deal formalizing the FCC’s sponsorship of a future Magic Kingdom attraction.
The deal would not only lead to the Florida Citrus Commission’s sponsorship of the Tropical Serenade, but it would also lead to the creation of the Orange Bird!
Walt Disney World STOLport Begins Operation (1971)
On this day in 1971, the Walt Disney World STOLport began operation.
The STOLport would only operate until December of 1972.
EPCOT Center Grand Opening Begins (1982)
On this day in 1982, EPCOT Center’s formal Grand Opening began.
On this day, Future World was dedicated as Cast Members dressed in tuxedos, and seven big bands provided entertainment.
The Orlando Sentinel Reports The End Is Near For Mr. Toad (1997)
On this day in 1997, The Orlando Sentinel reported that Walt Disney World planned on closing Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.
The reports ended up being true, as Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride closed in 1998 and was replaced by The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Disney Channel Rocks! Debuts (2010)
On this day in 2010, Disney Channel Rocks! Debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The new live show featured music from High School Musical, Camp Rock, and more!
Lady and the Tramp Screening Held
Finally, on this day in 2019, The Cinema Society hosted a screening of Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp.
The live-action remake of the Disney animated classic would debut on Disney+ on November 12.
