Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- November 2.
November 2nd was a busy day in Disney history, with the loss of a Disney Legend, the release of a popular Pixar film, and the end of the line for Walt Disney World’s original water park. So, let’s get started!
Out of Scale Released (1951)
On this day in 1951, the Donald Duck short Out of Scale was released.
In the cartoon, Chip ‘n’ Dale make themselves at home in Donald’s model train set.
Julie Andrews Performs in Disneyland (1963)
On this day in 1963, Julie Andrews and Wally Boag put on a special press-only event at the Golden Horseshoe.
The performance was staged to promote the release of Mary Poppins.
Paul Frees Passes Away (1986)
On this day in 1986, Disney Legend Paul Frees passed away at the age of 66.
Frees is perhaps best known to Disney fans as the voice of the Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion. He also voiced several characters in Pirates of the Caribbean and Ludwig Von Drake in the Disney anthology television series.
Disney Announces Dixie Landings (1989)
On this day in 1989, Walt Disney World announced plans to build Dixie Landing.
The resort would eventually open in 1992 and change its name to Port Orleans — Riverside in 2001.
Mission to Mars Closes (1992)
On this day in 1992, Mission to Mars closed in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.
The space would eventually reopen as Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port in 1998.
Monsters, Inc. Released (2001)
On this day in 2001, Monsters, Inc. opened in theaters.
The film tells the story of two monsters who work in Monstropolis, a town run on scare power.
River Country Opens (2001)
Also on this day in 2001, Disney’s River Country closed.
Walt Disney World’s original water park, River Country took visitors back to the old swimming hole.
Wreck-It Ralph Released (2012)
On this day in 2012, Wreck-It Ralph was released.
The film tells the story of Ralph, an arcade game villain who dreams of being a hero.
Remember… Dreams Come True Ends (2014)
On this day in 2014, Remember… Dreams Come True ended its second Disneyland run.
The show originally ran from 2005 until 2009, before returning in January 2010.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Released (2018)
Finally, on this day in 2018, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was released.
The film was a retelling of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Marius Petipa’s The Nutcracker.
